Old Evinrude Gearcase Part ID Help Needed

Hi Guys,

I am finishing up my 1978 Evinrude 115 cross-flow build and the gearcase is the last part. I started pulling it apart yesterday and found a part loose inside that I've never seen before (Part # 5) - It is a tubular magnet about 2" long and coiled around it is a spiral wound spring (football in shape). I can find it on line in the part fiche, but it gives no clue to where it goes as it's shown above and behind the water pump. The factory OMC manual for the 1978 Johnson/Evinrude does not show where this goes.

I'm sure it has something to do with metal capture so I'm figuring it should be in the shifting cavity, but where?

Just guessing but does the bolt (part #63 in your diagram) below it go through that part? It kind of looks like that bolt aligns with the “shaft” of the “football spring”’.

There is no hole - a solid magnet. That drawing has it in the wrong place. I'm almost certain it goes in the oil/gearcase grease cavity to collect and capture metal fragments, I've just never seen one of those parts before and neither the diagram nor factory manual shows it installed or placement.

Those went in the shift rod hole in front of gearcase. I would leave it out and buy drain plugs with magnets
