    1985 Mercury XR2 150 water pump base

Need help. Canít find correct water pump base for xr2 150. I need one with a dowel hole in the bottom. I purchased a 46-96418A kit, which is number on upper portion of pump housing. It did not include seal for base, which I need.I then ordered a base according to chart on internet. It is 46-8M0077147. It does not have dowel hole in bottom. No number on old base. Any help is appreciated.

Do you think it is possible part of base stuck in gear case ?
96-146A6 does not look like base I removed, best I can tell in pictures. I read an old thread and it stated only part of pump base came out, it mentioned the dowel hole I was talking about. Do any pump bases have a hole for dowel pin ? Thanks for help.

First off, thanks for the help. I am not familiar with all the terms, so excuse my bad descriptions. I believe what has happened is when I removed water pump base, that the bottom in which the large oil seal is in, stuck to the driveshaft and pulled out of pump base. Therefore leaving a piece which I thought stayed on drive shaft just above bearing in place, which had a dowel or pin sticking up like the ones on top side of base. I will take it apart and take pictures and post when I can. It is a ez-shift pre-load type with driveshaft nut. As you can tell, not a mechanic but like to fix my own stuff and learn how it works. May come in handy with a 30+ year old Merc. Thanks again.

sometimes tha bottom piece (part with big o-ring) will break off tha base when ya pry tha base out.. sometimes so clean it looks ta be two separate pieces.. if your case is tha pre-load it will not have tha drive shaft nut.. does tha drive shaft have a small pin sticking out tha top?.. if so you need tha base in tha diagram/parts list in tha link posted............

It does have the small pin on top of driveshaft. It has drive shaft nut on pinion gear. I think you are exactly right about base coming apart. I have pump ordered. Will see if that is what is going on when I tear it down.

its referin' ta tha nut that holds top drive shaft bearin' in place.. Thats one of tha things that changed when tha pre-load case went away...

What I thought happened, did happen. Bottom of wp base stuck to driveshaft. Removed it and part # 96-146A6, as suggested, fit. Thanks for the help
