XR-6 Idle Stabilizer/Idle set question
1993 XR6 on my 16 Donzi
I have followed manual to the T on the Lync and sync and want to confirm that If I've disconnected the white/black wire coming out of the idle stabilizer at the connector (which is after the switch boxes) have I truly disabled the idle stabilization feature?
I guess the reason I ask is with the wire unplugged or plugged in I get the same idle timing reading at cranking speed. Does the box advance timing at cranking speed or does the motor need to be running?
Thanks
Eric

Hi bud, welcome to S&F! You're doing the right thing to yank the black boxes. If you haven't yet, the oil pump is next and then go to premix.
You'll have your answer shortly on your questions.1990 Shadow bass boat w/ 2.4 200 Merc. Totally resto'd boat and love it!

Yes, I've removed oil injection. I'd like to keep the idle stabilization because I bought this boat for my kids to learn on so dock manners are important (they are only 7&9 so idle stability is the name of the game!!)

In my extensive experience with the idle stabilizers they don't actually work even if they are new they don't do much. I would ditch it completely for the following 2 reasons (that come from personal experience with 20+ motors with these)
Even with the white wire disconnected the module can still fail and send your high speed stator power straight to ground
The motor will run no different with the box on as with it off (unless the box is already causing problems) as it seems you have found. It will only read different when its tripping out and failing.8' Yellow Jacket - 25 hp Mariner

I actually don't see an idle stabilizer listed as an XR6 part. Do they really have one on those engines?

So I've been chasing a high idle that I couldnt tame after a carb rebuild and 2 Lync & Syncs, only to realize I had inadvertently left the idle mixture screws out of the lower carb. Somehow I got lucky and was able to dig them out of the trash can....
Got to head to the ramp to get a better feel for where the idle is now.....
I'll be back with more questions. If it idles well enough I'll ditch the stabilizer.....

Oh I see it now. It's listed with the cylinder block parts rather than the electrical parts. In any case looking over the years sometimes it is just a singular idle stabilizer and sometimes it is a combination of idle stabilizer and rev limiter. For example, my earlier model XR4 had the combination, but then the later model XR4 had the singular idle stabilizer. Most of the XR6's have the singular idle stabilizer with the exception being the latest models which also happen to have the CDM ignition.
Pretty consistently guys say to pull these off and trash them... I think mainly because when the go awry, it can cook your engine. I am wondering, but actually hope, that this recommendation really only applies to the combination part. I've pulled all of mine, but think I could actually really benefit from some idle stabilization on my engines. So I am thinking of reconnecting the singular version.
