Installing piston pin
200 merc V200
Do I have to buy, borrow, or beg the install kit described in the manual or what's the secret or tips to removing the old pin and installing the new one in the new piston and bearing?

Pry clip out of one end. Push pin out. If needed use a deep well and tap it out. I think I have used a 13mm 3/8 drive. Use a grease of some sort to glue needles in rod end. Insert rod end into piston and hold it in place with same socket. Push socket out of bore with piston pin and prepare for the fun part which is putting in the new clip.

The tool makes life so much simpler. Don't want to distort a c clip.

Agree with Dave....the Mercury circlip installation tool is worth EVERY PENNY. Once you use it, you will never put a motor together again without it.

One word of advice, make sure the gap in the clip does not line up with the notch in the piston, it's a bitch to get them back out if they do.

Thanks all for your feedback and ideas. I like the idea on the deep well socket, Rock, and the hot/cold, Roadkill. Very good detail on the clip, 99.

I had a machinist buddy cut a good used wrist pin just under the piston width so you can easily install the bearings, put it in the piston and push the cut pin through with the new pin. (sorry didn't have any needles handy)
Here's my circlip tool, got it from Jay Smith several years ago.
And my "home made" ring compressor, made by the same buddy.

And dittos on the importance of the clip installation tool. No, I don't have one. Yes, I WILL have one if I do this again!

I put the wrist pin needles in a row.
Put grease on the wrist pin all the way around where the needles were going to go.
I then rolled the greased pin over the needles. They stick to the grease.
Usually 2 or 3 wouldn't "fit" so I'd have to push them into place tightening them up around the pin.
Then I'd lube the inside of the rod with the grease.
Grab the wrist pin spacers (top guided) slide that on one side.
Then I put the rod over the wrist pin and needles.
I used the spacer to hold the pins in the rod and pull the pin out.
Put the other spacer on the other side of the rod and carefully slide it into the piston.
Install the wrist pin and the other clip.
All said and done it was about a 2 min process.
hopefully that all makes sense

I do similar, I use the new pin and put needle bearing grease in center of the pin, I then line up all the needle bearings , then I roll my pin over the needle bearings and it picks them all up but 1 or 2 , once all of needles r on the pin ,take ur washer and slide over pin to straighten out the needles , then u can slide pin and needles thru the rod ,use the washer to hold the needles n place while u push the pin out other side , put rod n piston slide all together. It works great for me.
