Butch Cassidy drove a Race Car, before he rode his horse.

The motion film before Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was publicly released,
    Paul did the movie Winning.

Before James Garner did the 1966 movie Grand Prix, he took race driving lessons from Bob Bondurant.

In like matter, Paul Newman did the same before his 60's movie Winning. He was taught also by Bob B.

Very cool.....Paul was quite a talented racer. Don’t forget about Steve McQueen as a racer, too. He finished second at the 1970 12 hrs of Sebring race behind Mario Andretti. Even Bruce Jenner (pre-boob job) was a talented driver back in the 70/80s.

Adam Carolla, the podcaster, also from The Man Show, owns the majority of Newmans old race cars. Including the Porsche that won their class at LeMons. Most are completely restored and he runs them in vintage races. He made that film as well as; The 24 Hour War and Shelby American, both are great and worth the watch.

Steve McQueen's 1970 LeMans movie captured the excitement of a race start.

In the movie the anticipation builds up for the start of the race.
The drivers are now in the race cars, and the outside noises and distractions subside.
Then the movie watchers hear a rhythm, like a heartbeat speeding up when nearer the drop of the flag.

And then the movie's director and Steve McQueen give us a crescendo, as the race engines roar to life.

Love the movie LeMans. Seeing that movie at the theater is what got me hooked on anything fast. I bought a jacket that is a copy of the racing suit he wore in the movie. Even has his character's name on the jacket, "Michael Delaney".

I saw Paul Newman race at the SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta; in a Nissan 300ZX. IIRC it was the GT1 class. Still have the pics in my old pic drawer. I think they are in Black and White because I ran out of film and the only film they had left at the track was B&W.
