    smartcraft

hooked up a smartcraft gauge to an opti.
    don't get any data.
it says something like it doesn't have connection. maybe 'no data com'.
all it shows is fuel used. 347gal.
tried it with switch on and in gear and out of gear.
    what could be the problem?
    thanks

Your possibly going to have to read the manual - you may need to setup . The manual is a few pages - so pay attention to Set- up and start getting to know your new guage system .

    definitely says: LOST ENGINE COM

i disconnected and reconnected both ends of cable with no change.
even reversed ends - no change.
cable pins/sockets are not corroded and look good.
looked online at several places for diagnosis. many of them talk about a junction box and resistors.
this is 1 engine on a bass boat.
    could pcm be bad?
    thanks

    it was the cable.
needed one with resistor at gauge end.
wish i knew how to just add resistor without running new cable.
    may just go with vesselview???
    it's only money.

    J-box, gender bender, resistor cap.

    I'd run a new cable.

I had the same problem with an all new install...it ended up my blue smartcraft cable was bad...You can add a junction box as was mentioned and put a terminator resistor in, or run a separate blue cable that has terminator resistors in each end. I wiring diagram of what you are working with would help. I assume your engine has a terminator resistor in it and then you just need the one on the helm side?

Blue cables are what RiChavis is asking for. They go from the gauge to the engine and have built-in resistors on each end.
If you run a side-mount box or a binnacle wiring harness with no built-in resistor then you have to go into a junction box with a terminator resistor, then out of the box to the gauge.
The early 14 pin harnesses to a dash/key switch did not have built-in resistors. The later ones have them and they are a little blue plug on a wire pigtail that almost looks like a weather cap. But it says "120" on it. Its possible you either have the older harness or someone replaced your terminator resistor with a weather cap.

Thank's thats what I was asking. My boat has a 2.5 200 hp motor now . The newer 2004 EFI down draft motor is smartcraft ready .
I have pick up a ( System monitor ) the early one's. Just to monitor motor function some.
I do know when I install the 3 liter motor i am going to have to buy a new harnesses adapter (14 pin) .
So all i need to get is a Blue SmartCraft cable with built-in resistor on each end ?

The monitor you have, is it the optimax small system monitor (like 2" dia.)? Or is it a 14 pin smartcraft gauge?
