I sanded with 120. I’m not sure if that’s “ideal”, but there aren’t any scratches visible after spraying the gel, and it should be coarse enough to make a “mechanical” bond to the existing.

Yep, 80-120 grit is good for a build up coat of 20 mils or more.

Is it fresh or old? Fresh you just clean it up with an old piece of 36. Just to get the stickers.

Other wise 80 on a DA works. Hit the bad spots first and that will wear down the grit.

I’m going to gel the inside of the hull over fresh glass and the outside after I’m done the layup. There is old gel on it I’ll probably sand it all off, roll gel on, sand that smooth, block it etc then spray gel for the final finish with flake and clear. Then cut and buff.

as I was thinking about this the other day it dawned on me I have no idea what grit to prep to before applying which is why I asked here.

Auto paint I used to do 180 before primer, 320 dry before paint or 400 wet. If it was a fancy job we’d go to 600 wet for black or candy etc. Of course it’s been a while since we did that, 20 years or more now.

Key to interior gell is thickness. Sand interior with rough paper 60-80 atleast and then roll on the gell kinda thin for the 1st coat (no wax) scuff any problem spots and roll on a med coat. Should be covering well now. Last coat roll on heavy (with wax) and tip with a brush all in one direction with long strokes as you roll it on.. It will flatten out and look good. This is my method and for ease it's great. No masking off and no overspray. PS. You can thin the last coat a little with styrene or with the duratec clear and skip the wax.

desire. Preparation is key. You definitely want to scuff up the old gel on your final cleaning use acetone or MEK to make sure it’s nice and clean. You can brush roll or spray depending on the desired finish. Spattered and webbing solution finishes cover a multitude of sins. I lightened up my Mirage and gave myself a little more legroom.

Excellent pointers and examples. All very helpful. As unreal as it feels we are getting quite close to this stage. Fortunately I get to have a practice run in the bilge area under the floor that won’t be seen so I can see how I make out with roll and tip. Another plus is my helper is a painter by trade and says he can do the splatter effect pretty easy. He says the trick is to wet the brush and hold it vertical then bang your brush hand into your other hand as a stop to splatter the paint off in droplets. Gonna find out soon I guess lol

The spatter technique is definitely a pain at least for me. I prefer using webbing solution and spraying the spider webbing much easier, at least for me. It seems like it would be hard using the drip technique, sidewalls or gunnels of the hull.

Indeed I suppose when you begin to splatter the gel around it’s a bit of a forest gump scenario; you never know what yer gonna get
