I bought the gel to coat the inside of the hull after I glass the core/stringers in. I will either spray with pva or add wax it is unwaxed. I will be spraying the hull with gel as well but not white so I will be sure to order spraying gel for that. Still haven’t set my mind fully on what color scheme I want yet, but there will be flake, and lots of it lol

Gel coat spray guns cost a ton. You can make a cheap one out of a drywall texture gun. Remove the hopper and fit a 1 qt acetone or lacquer thinner can (filler cap down with can bottom removed with a can opener). The gun will hurl just about any gel viscosity you can come up with. Flake can be tricky. It's all in the technique of getting the flakes to lie down or stand on their edges.

Fortunately I have had a lot of paint experience with house of kolor product using flop control and whatnot for pearls and candy so I get what your saying. I was thinking about buying the 3m nozzle replaceable spray system. I have a couple gti devilbiss hvlp guns but won’t be using them for spraying gel.

what I want to do is base in a solid color. Probably black. Spray the flake, clear the flake, block sand that clear down then clear it all again but that’s how you paint flake. Gel flake seems different. I have a bit of time to plan this out I’m still in early stages of the build

Watch out for hi humidity when doing flake and clear. Too much, and it can make the clear cloudy and milky.

320, 600, 800, 1000, maybe 1200, then buff. The first pass is the most difficult. And it really isn’t that bad. I have about 2 hours into what’s done so far, and it was a lot of detail work. All the radii, all done with a little strip of paper and my fingers.

im using an 18” long dura bloc and lots of water with a little dawn dish soap.

probably going to switch to a 24” block on the deck.

Nope. Going to use a longboard. I really want to be straight as an arrow and a mirror. Air tools can cut too fast....(meaning I don’t have enough experience to not mess it up)

She sure is nice and bright though. This was after washing off the pva. I sprayed the deck last night.

Got about 10 hours into it with 320 so far. The freeboard is about all that’s left, and a small spot in the middle of the deck.

I used to manage a production shop. We built small buildings for rural water systems, and hoppers and cowlings for a radial to turbine conversion on an ag plane.

Buildings were all built with a chopper gun, so there was usually a few pin holes on the inside walls. Best fastest way I found was to use a nap roller, gel, and a bit of wax mixed in. 90% of the time it would cover in one coat.

Didn't know they made a brush on gel either. We just used regular gel which was rather thick to begin with. You had to use a pressure pot to spray it unless it was a really small job.

    Nice job Hula!
