Depends on how clean it is and the local market. I bought a not too clean 175 2.0L 1988 for $1500 4 years ago, ran it for 3 years and sold it back to the shop I got it from cause they were always telling me they sold it too cheap. In my opinion the 2.0 fishin motors are worth about 2000 here in California

If it's an XR2, then it's not an '88. It's an '87 or older. The '88 model XR motor was an XR4 (2.4L from 2.0L). I have an '87 XR2. My impression is they don't fetch that much money. Some guys like to Salvage the heads off these motors and put them on 2.4L 200's because they give better compression.

I bought an 86' XR2 for $500 local on FB marketplace here in MD. The skeg had a chip and it needed a rectifier and switchbox... I went through the carbs but they were actually really clean. After running it, it has 120psi dead even on every cylinder cold test... runs like a top! I think I got a great deal. Then again I would call it a mechanics special given that I put some hrs into it.
I bet you could get $1500 easy with a good comp test/run demo. Hopefully the cowling is good, selling with controls?
