    Painting a powerhead

I'm starting to put my 2.4 200 Merc back together and it's in pieces now. Was thinking about painting it perhaps something different than black. Does anyone have suggestions on that? How to prep? When to paint things? Paint each individual piece and then assemble or paint it in various states of assembly?

It's sleeved and honed and ready for assembly after I thoroughly clean it. thanks

Mother Merc seems to paint them as a long block. At least thats how my 2.0 appears. Kinda like the old 2 cylinder John Deere tractors, painted everything at the same time, bolt heads and all. Personally I prefer the look of parts painted individually. Plus you don't run the risk of pulling paint off should you have to disassemble something in the future. Just the risk of scratching things as you reassemble.

Yeah, I think they paint them as an assembly to help prevent corrosion. I think I'm going to paint the pieces individually. If T-Rex was still on here, he would suggest Plum Crazy Purple or Hemi orange.

I’ve painted a lot of car engines. The best results are base/clear urethane in my experience. Lasts a looooong time and retains shine. Prep for this type of paint it’s far more critical for surfaces to be clean clean clean and I mean clean. Bare aluminum is a pain in the rear to paint so leave the paint on parts to be painted, wash with dish soap and water and de grease with the reducer of the primer you want to use. If you want top results epoxy 2k primer is bullet proof and you can get it tinted to match the base tone. I too suggest painting assembled it’s a far better way to protect and make for a lasting result. Bolts will sheer and damage painted surfaces which opens them up for water damage

also bolting down over paint like this will result in improper torque as the paint will crack under the bolt heads and loosen up over time. Plenty of reasons not to paint engine parts disassembled

I agree with Lake fever. You'd think that the heat would cause issues, but I have done three motors with urethane(not base/clear) and have had zero issues with using urethane. I also agree with using epoxy paint as the base primer. That stuff just plain bites into stuff. I have done small parts off of the longblock on my crossflow motors such as water covers and such(they were powder coated chrome). But I used another cover in its place, so that I could paint the long block. I also have junk spark plugs to use for paint jobs, so that the areas under the plugs don't get paint on them. I like bare metal under the plug.

I used plum crazy paint to paint my first 235.............it looked great. I polished the thermostat covers and made my own custom color plug wires. I should have never gotten rid of that motor..............

Motor that runs at a 143deg will not affect the paint, exhaust adapter is another story.

Rattle can is cheap, easy, and sticks good. Dont know about show car shine or longevity but for speed and ease its hard to beat. I had good luck with rustoleum ceramic rattle can paint. They sell product called cast aluminum that looks soooooo close to raw cast aluminum. I used it on a bare aluminum block that had gotten dark and ugly with age. Sprayed it right on no primer and it was pretty decent

The Mercury rattle cans are very good quality, goes on great and has a good durable finish. They even have a clear.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like it will be getting painted after the main pieces are put together. James Peery sleeved one burned up hole and also fixed a sleeve that had been in there before I got it that needed a little help. I'll post pics

Did you ever get it painted? Im about to paint one i just finished and looking for ideas. Sounds like a urethane base and clear is the way to go. Ill be putting mine on a mariner mid that will be restored as well. Im thinking mariner grey on the lower, mid and cowl and gunmetal (dark) grey block with burnt orange heads, flywheel, throttle arm, etc. Maybe even put some flake in it too.
