Which 60 hp 4-stroke outboard for my 12' tunnel?

I'm planning to join the 4-stroke crowd with my mini tunnel boat. I'm considering either the Merc or Tohatsu at this time.

Mercury offers two 20" 60 hp 4-strokes. A regular model and a CT model. The regular one has a 1.83 gear ratio while the CT has a 2.33 ratio. The CT is designed for heavier boats, however, when looking at the specs on this model it seems to be a 20" version of their racing 15".

The gear cases on both the 15" Merc Racing 60 and 20" Merc CT are larger and can handle larger props.

The Tohatsu has a 2.08 gear ratio and apparently it's gear case size is similar to the Regular Merc.

I like to be able to run mid to high 40's. In order to do this, with 10% slippage, I calculate the 2.33 (Merc CT) ratio would require a 21" pitch prop, the 2.08 ratio (Tohatsu) would require a 19" pitch and the 1.83 ratio (Merc Regular) would require a 17" prop.

I like to get the Tohatsu because of price and weight. However, when looking at available props from the normal suppliers, I don't see anything above 17" props for the Tohatsu. Would I be limited to 17"?

Our Club "umpba" has a 60R on our Ambush 17.5 foot jon boat. with very little set up time we have it going 45.3 mph with 2 people in a boat. you should be able to hit that number with your mini tunnel no prob with one.

Do you know the specs on the prop he is using? My guess it's a 21".

Yes I'd like to know the pitch on the Ambush, however, that's not the bigger question I'm asking. That is, which outboard would someone recommend for my 12' tunnel? Since I apparently can't buy a 19" Tohatsu prop from normal (cheap) suppliers, I realize that Hill would build me one $500. But are their other reasons why I should spend more money on the Merc 60 vs the Tohatsu and if so, which one?

yeah didn't mean to derail the thread that way. I'm partial to the merc 60R as that is what i have direct experience with. That said I do know alot of people playing with the thatsu's and they do make an incredibly nice and under rated engine.

you do get about 300 more RPM's out of the Merc but the gear ratio is 2.33 vs. 2.08. The one thing i was suprised on was the Merc has a racheting gearcase which might come in handy on your tunnel.

Thanks for the info. Since my boat will likely be under 50mph, I doubt I'd have a need for a ratcheting gearcase. I'm in Norcal and I can buy a 50 tohatsu with controls and prop for $6k. The local Merc dealer will sell me a 50 Merc, I believe the 1.83 gearcase version, for $7k+ with the controls. Looks like I will give the Tohatsu a try. Thanks for all the info.
