I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

    100% agreed.

I remember my dad telling me how happy he was I was in the basement building a boat instead of inside playing video games like his friends kids were at the time.

Id like to build another one though to make up for how bad I butchered that one

My parents would drop everything to take me and my brother to the hobby shop for a new rocket or cox powered model plane that you actually had to build and paint yourself to keep us busy/happy and not hanging out in the woods behind the school smokin dope, as we got older the projects got bigger but we were instilled at a young age with that drive to do it yourself. Gary we can thank our parents for what we have, I know if i had to buy what i have in toys i would have to make tripple my salary...

    100% agreed Dave.

An interesting change w/kids I noticed 20 yrs ago was, they don’t ride bicycles anymore.
    Their parents take them everywhere.

I still remember my first bike and the freedom it gave me and it was a huge awakening for me.
All of a sudden the couple block range that I was exploring by foot became a couple miles.
    Then several miles, etc.

As a young kid of 8 or 9, I remember Saturday’s as a special day.
My friends and I rode our bikes (20” single speeds) the 4 or 5 mls (each way) to the local hobby stores to lust after the latest models on display.

    Our bikes were everything.
We mostly obeyed the limits our parents set for us and they trusted our judgment towards traffic, routes etc.

Now you never see a kid on a bike.

Even though we lived far enough from school to be on a bus route, I rode my bike.
I was hooked on that freedom and idea of exploration.

And, I don’t remember any of us being chubby

Today they’re all pandered to by their parents, neighbors, society, media, face trash etc.
A parent forcing their kid to use a bike today, would be labeled an abuser!

I clearly remember reenterIng the dating scene after my divorce and of course at that age (25 yrs ago at age 36) all my dates had kids.
One of the first had a teenage son who she hauled everywhere.
I remember he had a near new bike (Christmas present) in their garage, that he never rode, and refused to ride.

He thought his friends would make fun of him!
I replied, “you mean instead of being stuck at home”?
Of course he was not, since his mom hauled him everywhere.

And yes that privileged attitude remained throughout that relationship.

Still can’t imagine my childhood w/o a bike and the responsibility it forced me to accept.

    When I Was Young

I used to find bikes in the trash. I liked the ones with 3 speeds and 26 inch wheels. That would be me seen with a Mark 58 exhaust housing on the crossbar 3 miles to the water. I used to keep the boat at a guy's house and all I had to do was mow the lawn. When most of the kids were going to the beach on the bus I was racing around in the bay.
