Thread: Best rough water boat

There are a lot of good CC boats in this size range that run well in rough water. They are typically deeper V than the boats listed above. And, you are standing when you plow through the waves.
Here's something I learned through the years- Almost all hulls push water out. Some designs push a LOT out, as in deeper V's. The less dead rise the harder the hull pounds the surface. Same is true for a deeper V to a point then pounding becomes slicing as you get on top of the water. If you are running straight into the wind and sea it's going to be a lot more pleasant than the same sea and wind if you are quartering it. You're likely to be wearing a lot of the water. But the faster you go the more likely you are to outrun the water your hull is pushing out and that the wind is picking up and blowing back at you. Then you stay drier.
I ran Contender CC boats for years. The 25 Open in particular would pound you until you "got on top". Once it started slicing the waves it ran faster and drier and ran along much more comfortably.\\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\///

There is no "best" rough water boat. Pick one you like and can afford.....Every boat is a trade off somehow...

I'd like to add a clarifier to the term "best rough water boat." The driver has a ton to do with how well a boat handles any kind of water. I've seen people driving hulls I know to be pretty damned good in rough water look like idiots - probably because they can't drive. On the other hand, I've seen folks who know how to drive take terrible rough water hulls and make them look pretty damned good. Yes, the hull is important, but don't forget the driver behind the wheel.
Speaking of best rough water hulls, let me share a story with you. Most of you know I have a Progression 22 and have owned (and driven the piss out of it) for over 25 years. So the boat is well known for being able to handle rough water. But how's the driver?
I've helped run and attended the Seneca Lake Battleship Run in upstate New York for the past 30 years. (I had a Checkmate for the first few years of the run.) Depending on how many boats attend the run, we break the attendees into 3 or 4 pace groups for safety reasons. For many, many years, I have paced the 55 MPH group - which is always the largest pace group. (Generally about 25 boats.)
At the Driver's Meeting, one of the questions I always ask is how fast folks really want to run because the lake can get rough. One year when we had 1-3's with whitecaps everybody said they wanted to run 55, then one guy said, "How the hell are you going to run 55 MPH in that little thing?" Another guy who knew me then replied with a sly smile, "Get ready for a driving lesson." So we went out and sure enough, I ran 55 MPH. By the first stop, I'd managed to lose almost half the fleet because they just couldn't keep up. And they were all bigger than me! I slowed it down to 45 MPH for the next couple of legs until the lake laid down a bit. After the run, the same guy came up to me and said, "I have to hand it to you, I've never seen anybody drive - and fly - a boat like that. You didn't even look like you were working hard. Nice job!"
So yes, a great hull really helps in rough water. A great driver may help even more.1992 Progression 22

Many good suggestions I’ll add the 24 and 26 Laveycrafts which are deep vee with 24 degree dead rise and now available in single outboard. The 24 with 400R is the setup Chris Camire suggests.
ive owned a 24 Pantera IO and it ran like a banshee in the rough but most straight vee 24/7 boats are not driver friendly. One bump of trim or tab can make the difference between a smooth ride or out of control chine walking or porpoise.Ing

For new, Mark at Rage can build his 28, Tuff 24 will be the fastest. A Concept 27, is an extended 25' runs pretty well for a CC. Chaudron 25 or 27 great rough water hull. Progression 24 is nice.

Surprised no one had mentioned this for sport boats, not manufactured any more but 26' Sutphen has to be the best rough water boat in that size and for a 24' Boat Pantera
