    Sportmaster/CLE question?

I have heard that you can put sportmaster internals in a CLE case, is that true? Any modifications required?
Are the sportmaster parts more robust than the CLE parts?

    Thanks Stoney

    Answers per sentence:
    1) yes
    2) no - but CLE single driveshaft top tapered roller bearing unloads, when pinion is loaded. Therefore SM has 2 bearings in X-configuration in that location. CLE casing cannot be modified to accommodate that arrangement. However, CLE driveshaft can be modified to accommodate the two-bearing arrangement for use in an SM casing (Mercury service bulletin).
    3) I did not do any NDT on the components, but would assume material properties to be the same.
Summary - you are better off with an SM.

The Sportmaster prop shaft would be a lot newer. My old CLE prop shaft and a Hoss Triton are on the lake bottom

    Thanks for the explanation wolfgangb!!

I agree, I would be much better off with a sportmaster lower, they are getting hard to find in good shape thats why I was inquiring into the CLE.

I have a Merc chopper and a sportmaster shaft in the Intercoastal canal also, it was a small shaft!

    Thanks!!

I just put the sporty guts in a 4 bolt passage CLE, yeah everything swaps except the driveshaft is single bearing v. double bearing in the sporty.
