New federal kill switch requirement
According to this thread on The Hull Truth--
https://www.thehulltruth.com/boating...l#post14388465
the new spending bill passed by Congress includes a requirement that boats under 26' other than those where the operator is in a cabin must now use kill switches. The Coast Guard information officer who posted that says it does not require a retrofit if you boat does not have one, not sure that is the case though.
I am no fan of burying oddball rules in a bill that is passed in a hurry, but I am a big fan of kill switches.
Hopefully not a change in method of operation for most of us, but FYI.Per Rock:

A quick search finds that the coast guard has now mandated that manufacturers of boats under 26 feet must include a kill switch. As for mandatory use, that is only in Texas, (2019) it is know as Kali’s law.

I hate government trying to tell me what to do but in this case it's a great idea. I have never driven a fast boat with out wearing one.

Bad idea. We do not need more laws, especially ones stuffed into a bill that has nothing to do with boat safety.
Although I think it is a good idea to use the kill switch, and almost always do use it, we do not need more government in our lives.
And why the 26' limit? That makes no sense at all. There are quite a few boats over 26' that have potential to cause a lot of harm because the driver made an unexpected exit from the cockpit.

Agreed , esp with the bigger and bigger multi engine center console's . Just my .02 , but there really is no good reason NOT to wear one.I have gone to find myself , If I return before I get back - Keep me here

Cabin Cruiser = one of their own. Don't bother them.
Everyone else , probable cause to at minimum waste a few hours of your day. Inspect and write you for whatever they want .. including not wearing a lanyard.
So one of the kids gets hooked by a bad cast from another kid in the boat while trolling the inlet. The hooked kid thinks its the end of the world and starts running in the direction he/she is facing. Wait till I get this clip off of my swimmin trunks, before you go jumping out of the boat between the motors .. Another example of idiot leftism ... **** em .. dumb azz mother *******
Part of the spending bill ...
Instead of putting a spending bill together to take a vote on after all of congress has time to read it and make amendments. The scarecrow and scummer write a bunch of BS into everything they come up with , hand it out late and before congress has time to read the first paragraph , those two commies are up in front of the cameras spewing lies .
Just listen to these two brain dead disrespectful POS's ...
Oh , we didn't expect the press to be here. What~cha~gotz~ya hide .. ???
scummer is just as bad , both needed to wear ball gags in order to listen .. that my friends had to also be stolen elections .. because there is no one really stupid enough to vote for either of those two azzclowns ...

No Retrofit Needed
Regarding retrofit requirement--I understand a little better now. The new section B says that using the kill switch is a requirement for boats described in Section A, which causes some confusion. Apparently "Section A" is an existing law that has required manufacturers of boats under 26' to include kill switches for a number of years (I tried to see how long, could not find it in a short search), and it is operators of these boats who must now use the switch.

I wonder if this applies to bare hulls or only rigged boats...Like what if I wanna buy a bare hull and then install a side mount box with it built in? Then does the boat mfr have to install one somewhere even though it has no motor?

25, I doubt that would be the case. I think at that point you become the boat builder/rigger and are responsible to put that equipment on befoe sale/delivery/use.
I'm not really basing that off of anything other than what would make sense in my mind though.

I know that mercury has required all of us to verify a functioning kill switch in every new motor sold by a merc dealer or rigged by a merc mechanic...And signing off by a registered merc tech is required for warranty...so in that case ever merc out there that has ever had warranty needed to have a kill switch (since merc has been requiring this, I don't recall when that was put in place).
I also know, however, that some techs don't even check the rigging before they sign the form.
I rigged my own brand new motor last year, and I did not install a kill switch, I guess I am a horrible person. But I have a variety of reasons for not installing it.8' Yellow Jacket - 25 hp Mariner
