Long term Outboard Storage
Hey Folks, is there any issue with storing an outboard upside down? Such as removing the cowlings and resting the motor directly on the flywheel? I have an old 115 tower that I took off of my viper, the lower has been removed and it has been in my shed upside down resting on the flywheel for about two years... Every once in a while I lay it down and spray oil in the carbs & plug holes and turn the motor over... I have a rag stuffed in the exhaust tube. Was just thinking all the weight of the motor is resting on the crank... good or bad?

There should be no problem I see with that storage, the only reason I can fathom would be if you were spinning it upside down and it caused an uneven stress on the bearings, but I don't think that even that would be an issue because the crank bearings do not sit in tapered races that are designed to provide support in one direction only.
Short answer is no, shouldn't be an issue for the crank. Just be sure that nothing falls down the exhaust tube and personally I would not want my floats sitting upside-down especially in that motor where they have springs that would now be stored in compression...8' Yellow Jacket - 25 hp Mariner

Very good point about the float springs, didn't think about that... It was just the easiest way to store & move it in terms of space and not having a stand... Maybe I'll find a way to prop it up. It is nice having it upside down for moving with a hand truck when needed...

Few 2x4 and screws should make a reasonable stand
ground contact it self is corrosive
nothing should be hurt it’s just not really done often. Most I see get layed on the mount'06 Tracker All-Fish/Tournament V-18 90 Optimax, 46.8 gps Goal one complete reach 45 mph.

Nothing wrong it that at all, I've done it a few times, properly winterized you will not have an issue.
