40 Something Face Off
OMC tried really hard to bridge the stock outboard and OPC categories with the 45SS / SST45. Meanwhile, Mercury seemed to keep a low profile in the stock outboard category with their 44XS. Was there ever any head-to-head competition between the 45SS and 44XS? I'm thinking the 44XS had a weight advantage over the 45SS. I would assume that both motors were run with fixed pin settings and no power trim? Pull start or electric? Did anybody try mounting a 44XS on a Sport C tunnel? Seems like the 44XS was exclusively reserved for stock outboarders?

I have not ever seen a 44xs but I did race 44 inch 500s in both SE and SD classes. Originally D class in both OPC and Stock Outboard was a 39 ci class. Basically the 40 hp Mercury. When I started racing E class was dominated by the 44 in 500s even though the class limit was 49in. !970 was the last time a 44in 500 was able to win Nationals. I know this because it was yours truly owner/driver. The 49in OMCs were already out then and by 71 the 500s couldn't keep up. In 1974 I brought back the same boat with the improved 500 now reclassified in to SD. At the time there was no OMC competitor to the 500 and it became the only competitive motor replacing the obsolete 39in 40s. During my time in OPC racing the 44xs would not have been legal in SD and not competitive in Mod 50.

I think the Merc is way too short to mount on a tunnel hull

Not enough prop diameter and wrong ratio too. Cute as a bug but was produced and homlogated for kneel down class boats.
