Why do the old mercury v6 has green paint on the top of the block

    Hello.
I noticed that the older mercury racing outboards have a green or blue paint on the top of the block. Why is this?
I saw multiple engines with this paint

Oh and also why is there a bolt on top between the cylinderbanks on the second image? Is this a place for some kind of pressure sensor?

Green paint means 225 promax....might have been how they kept them straight on the assembly line. The “bolt” in that pic is a plug. Sometimes that plug has a bolt in it for the top pin to keep the cowling from shaking to death

Really? So the top motor is a 225 hp engine? It is an xr2, i thought xr2 were 150 hp. So the paint is from factory?

Your XR2 is different than our XR2 so idk about paint color. Your XR2 I thought was rated at 200hp....ours is a 150 and nowhere near as cool

take a closer look.. top picture not a 225 block... its his XR2... have never heard "exactly" what tha paint means but i don't think designates a particular motor... jmo.

One of my 2.4s has purple paint spot on it...I wanna know what that was...and the block has no serial number that I can find.

And yeah, there were different xr2s. The black max XR2 (150) is not the same as the racing XR2 (2.0 choked down 2.5 block I think).... but that is not the point of this thread.

The European race XR2 (which you showed in the gear case thread) is a different engine from the American XR2, which was a bass fishing engine.

Both were based on the 2 liter block, but the race XR2 made just below 200 hp in stock form, while the bass XR2 made roughly as much power as a 150hp engine was allowed to make, i.e. 165 hp in the center of the recommended WOT rpm range, and probably a bit more at the the top of the range.__PRESENT
