Thread: Hyd Steering Systems for SOB

I'm repowering a Checkmate 24 with a 300R. I researched everything I could find and decided to go with the Uflex Silversteer 1500 psi tilt helm front mount cylinder system. I'll let you know whether or not it works out for me.

I have both Silversteer and SeaStar Pro. I've been very impressed with Uflex.

I have been leaning to the Uflex Silversteer myself. It seems as though the side ram systems can be trouble if not fully executed perfectly. Cylinder to drive geometry, helm and fluid flow. Just like a race car the most important part is correctly purging the air out of the system and periodically checking everything over.

I have a 2020 long deck Checkmate Pulsare with a 300R. It came from the factory with mercury hydraulic steering. Checkmate told me it is self bleeding but I am not convinced. The steering wheel slowly changes position over time if you want to go straight ahead. It steers fine and you can control it when it starts walking.

For the guys running 2.0/2.4 Sea Star helms with side rams....what hose are you running from helm to transom? The 5/16 Parkerflex that’s supplied with front mount rams or -8 aeroquip? Looks like everybody uses -6 at the side rams...but curious about the hose you can’t see running to the helm itself.

...maaaaaayyyybbbeeee. maybe not. ...don't know. i do know this... the steering cylinder in the photo works well powered, or not. whether its a latham, a marine machine, a geiger, a hardin, a mayfair, etc., they all can be low or high pressure rigged...

I happen to have tilt helms in my current boats but have run fixed positions in the past.

Figured I would update this thread as I went with the Seastar pro system. I am very pleased with it so far, easy install, bleed easy and works great. No slop at all, but I feel as though I may need to hit the gym with no power steering when flying on the pad haha!!!! Its a work out to say the least!
