Hyd Steering Systems for SOB
What does everyone like, fast reacting for a pad boat? Most likely going to run a 300xs on my new Tuff 24 build, and I have heard that the newer Seastar stuff might not be as good anymore.

I hope the newer Seastar stuff - particularly the Seastar Pro - is "good enough." I was kind of forced to go with it on my Progression 22 re-rig with a 250R. I had Latham single ram wing plate steering with a Capilano helm on the old 2.5/200, but we couldn't re-use most of it on the new motor according to Mercury Racing. We kept the helm, but everything else is new. BTW, the Latham setup was awesome.

I would do a side ram with a 2.0 seastar helm. I have one set up that way on my Allison and it works great. I don't like running front mount steering on anything with big power and torque when you have other options that are proven to be stronger. This set up with braided #6 line seems to fit the bill.

Too stroked, I ran that combo and hated it. Helm pumps to much fluid for the small ram, making small adjustments very difficult.

Johnny talked to Mercury Racing and they said they would not warranty a 250R if we added wing plate steering to it. Their only suggested alternative? Buy the 300R. I'm sure Bob Latham would have something awesome that would work, but I wasn't willing to give up my warranty for it. Maybe after the warranty is up though ...
As for the pic you posted, that's a sweet system, but it's 3.0 liter. The 250R is a 4.6 liter.1992 Progression 22

IMO go seastar helm imco side ram. I had a complete sea star setup and decided for a full upgrade when the ram needed to be resealed. That along with offshore clamp made for a night and day difference.

Still waiting to get the boat back, so I can't offer any observations yet. The 200 was modified by Diamond Marine and put out 240 HP at the powerhead. It was light, snorty and had very little low end torque. Typical of a 2 stroke.
The 250R is heavier, but has bags more low end torque and more HP to boot. Our hope is to take a 77 MPH boat and turn it into a mid-80's MPH boat - with acceleration that will make the old 200 look weak in the knees. I could have gone for any number of used 250XS motors, but decided to bite the bullet and go for the very latest and greatest. I'll keep everybody informed as to how it runs as soon as it hits the water.1992 Progression 22

The 250R is not available with a wingplate from Merc. Adding one voids the warranty as its built into the powerhead. Neither Latham nor IMCO make a wingplate for the 250R, even though Im sure its very similar to the 300R.
When I talked to Merc Racing before ordering Tom's engine, their advice was to upgrade our customer to a 300R...you know....for the wingplate.Johnny Saris

You should get high 80's might even break 90 on a perfect day with a good setup. With a 04 250xs the best I saw was 86.1 always 84-85 with 2-3 ppl in the boat, that's with the wrong
Gearcase (straight skeg sporty). Couple mph faster but had bad handling characteristics at times had tq lean and would blowout as well sometimes. Could just imagine the smile on your face when you feel the tq difference. Those R motors seem to b putting out a nice tq increase over the 3 liters. Keep us posted as you always do, thanks.Last edited by Duro78; 12-04-2020 at 05:24 PM.

The only way to go is a side mounted ram. I’m using a Seastar 2.4 pump with a Imco ram. Huge difference compared to the Seastar Pro I removed.
