The "A" photo is correct, at least for my gearcase.

From the very first post "A" is correct. 50/60 fourstrokes have the same thing. Mushroom/flange goes DOWN. As people are sayin here, it will not fit up. And never go by the merc manual pictures, try to always go by the text...I've personally found at 5 instances of a merc manual being drawn wrong (and verified it) and I have only been lookin at merc books for 4 years...thats a lot of errors if you ask me.
