    Reed stops

    Gentlemen 3 questions........

    1) do the older reed stops flow better than the new ones? FYI for some......the 70's cages(at least the v6's) came with a reed stop that had slots in between the fingers. whereas the newer ones were just a solid piece of steel. Someone please post a pic if you have an old style stop. I had a set and got rid of them before I ever asked the question I am now.....

    2) why did omc always shim up one side of the reed stops?

    3) are stops really necessary for composite reeds. The two stagers dint use them......

    My opinion is:

    Reeds want what they want.
They don’t care if there’s a stop there or not.
I haven’t run stops on hot rod motors in yrs.

They flow what they need to flow.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

So the reeds (composite) will have a better flow with out the stops ??

What is Mr Carsons view on this ????

Yes the early looper reed stops would break, the later ones starting I believe in 88 were much better. Cross flow totally different.

Racer has to be within a year?.I think 90?
Only because the 2 I had on my boat were '88 and had the crappy stops..had another 6-8 or so that I had all were 88-89-90..the other half dozen or so were 95 newer so didn't see exactly when.. .BUT doesn't mean someone didnt swap them before I got them
But they were all the same..88-89-90
    95 was the newer...
But thats one of the reasons I went with boyesen reeds no reed stops...and after reading thru racers post of the comparison years ago was just waiting to
And thanks again Racer for all that work and posting the
Comparison.. definitely not something you could find anywhere else really..

Of course always bookmark stuff like that in its own folder... When they speak/post listen..be nice to know as much as Als forgotten about porting etc..lol
Was 10 years ago and I remember sitting there reading it after he posted it. Was tempted to run out and get reeds right then ..I did wait till next season when I was doing another motor.

Many years ago modded a v4 cross and used some brass .030 shim stock, to raise the stops. used stock reeds. you could hear the difference. throttle response was instant, would have been a great drag mota, turned it to 7700.
