    Setback question?

I currently have a CMC 5-1/2" hydraulic jack plate on my transom, followed by a 2" spacer then the engine clamp for a total of 7-1/2" of setback (was this way when I bought it). I want to remove the 2" spacer and add a 6" setback to get close to 12" overall. My question is as I've seen pictures both ways, what is the proper order?.....Hydraulic on the transom or on the fixed 6" setback?
    Thanks for your input.

I saw this discussed on another forum a while back and the answers pros and cons of each were were kinda all over the place. Not sure there is an absolute correct answer, i think it has a lot to do with what boat you're putting it on.

I've always heard the jack plate should be at the motor. And not to derail but where do you buy the additional setback "thing"?

I was looking at the fixed 6" from Bob's Machine unless I find someone else that has one.

Quick question. Are you using the stock steering cables with that set back? Don't want to derail your post but I have a Pulse 186 and the engine is still on the transom, I don't want to buy a plate only to find out I have to replace the steering cables also. Thx!

I had a Baja 186 with a L&S hydraulic jack with 5.5" of setback and 2.0L 150 HP Mercury. I added Bobs 2" blocks between the Jack & motor, not what I preferred but I think the jack was installed with 5200 as a sealer and I didnt want to damage the gel trying to remove it. I was always a little nervous as the L&S jack has S/S studs tapped into the aluminum housing on both sides. The CMC may be a stronger and better design set up as I believe you use nuts & bolts as opposed to the studs. I had the Baja with the blocks between the motor and plate for 18 years with no issues. It would run about 65-68 and it towed skiers and tubes so there was a lot of fast starts. Looking back I probably should have used a transom saver as a precaution but the nuts & washers in the stern well never flexed.

That's exactly how my current setup was laid out with a 2.4 175, but now I'm running a 2.5 200 on it which is why I am looking for input so I set it up the right way, last thing I want is problems at speed.

To its a case of put the solid setback on the boat then the jack-plate on the setback then motor.
so boat then set back then jack-plate then motor

the reason i say this is every hydraulic jack-plate has a slight bit of movement , no matter how slight there has to be some or it would bind..
if you have the jack-plate on the boat first , by the time you get to the motor you have exaggerated the amount of movement and this would
quickly wear a lot of parts on the jack-plate and could lead to a very sloppy motor to steer....

just my opinion, but its definitely how i see this type of thing

Thank you very much, that's exactly the kind of input I was looking for.....makes complete sense the way you summed it up, limit the amount of leverage on moving parts.
