What happens when a two stroke is run without oil?

Does the bottom end fail first or the pistons/rings/cylinders?

My story is I took a work assignment out of country and told a trusted old friend to use my boat whenever. It's a 98 2.5 200 carb fishing motor. It looks like the pressure line to the oil tank cracked. The key harness didn't have a warning horn in place and he heard what he described as a rod knock and shut it down. He gave me two grand which I thought was a nice gesture (that's what I paid for the motor a few years back). I'm a good auto mechanic but I think another used motor might be the smartest move. My other thought is to put premix in a small tank, fire it up and see what it sounds like. Then follow that with a compression test. What would you experts do?

Pull heads. Capt. is correct, piston to wall first. If you see no transfer you may be ok.

That is a good block. Tear it down and fix it properly..that one will have plastic caged rod bearings which will fail quickly too under a no oil situation.

Bought a Glastron Ski Machine forever ago without motor. Installed a good running 2.0 150. Went about 1/2 mile and toasted motor. Disassembled and everything was dry as a bone. I had drained and filled fuel tank with premix but did not notice previous owner had an auxiliary fuel tank and his motor was oil injected therefore zero lube. I was amazed at how quick they can fry.

Funny story, back in 1979 I was racing desert on a 175 Yamaha. I ran out of gas about 10 miles from the finish. I got about 1/2 a gallon of straight gas and rode it in easy I might add to the finish. I used Castrol Oil as premix. When I got home I tore it down and everything looked great! I imagine that an outboard would not make it very far because of the loads that are put on the engine from the water drag.
