    Phantom 25 1985 - 450R

    Hi!

I hope everything is ok with you all.

I am going to buy a 450R next year. Currently I have a 400R on my Phantom 25. The boat runs 88-89 mph spinning a Max5 25 standard tube prop at 7,040 rpms. The propshaft is 2 inches above the bottom. In all approx 8 inches setback incl notch. The boat ran 81 mph on a good day with a 350 Sci spinning a REV4 25 prop at 6,500 rpms. Propshaft 2 inches below the bottom.

I am not sure how much gain I will get with the 450R, but if I am correct the 400R is pulling 390 HP and 450R 450 HP. So maybe 94-96 mph at WOT.

I plan to buy a Max5 27 pitch prop. What do you think? I presume its wise to test out the Max5 25 first but I expect it to hit the rev limiter hard then. Do you have other suggestions? A CNC Hill 5 blade cleaver could also be the thrick, although its an expensive prop that too. In Norway we need to buy to test ....

    Have a good day.

    Cheeers, Toffen

That’s great. I think you are right with the prop. Please list again all the engines you have tried. I have had 3 engines on my SS2000, but you are ahead

    1999 - 2006 - Promax 300 SVS - top speed 76 mph
    2006 - 2010 - 2 x Merc 2,5 EFI SS w/PCU - top speed 87 mph
    2011 - 2016 - Verado 350 Sci - top speed 81 mph

    Hello Toffen!

It seems that I've read that its approximately 4 pitches up to go from 400R to 450R. I have a feeling that the 450R will pull a 29 in the Max5.
Maybe drop a line to Nick Peterson at Merc racing. I believe he may be familiar with your application.

The same speeds with a 400R Vs. twin 2.5s is a no brainer. I wouldn't have expected the speeds to be nearly as close and would have thought the advantage to be with twins. The 450 is going to give you an additional 100 ft. lbs. of torque (getting on plane will be effortless).

    Hi!

    Thanks

I tested several props when running the twin 2,5 EFI SS engines. The engines was tuned by Michael Werner, several F1 world champion. The acceleration was insane - on plane in 2 seconds. However, maintaince and fuel & oil costs was bad indeed ...

The 350 Sci pulled harder on plane and mid range than the 400R. 400R picks up from 5,000 rpms and onwards. I really look forward to the torque of 450R.

If I can turn a 29 til peak power of 450R (6,200 - 6,400 rpms), the speed will be insane ... Oioi

I presume the 450R can be run at the same height as 400R. I run the propshaft 2 inches above with the 400R. The speed really pics up above 1,5 inches above.

    Cheeers, Toffen
