Pork Chop Build / Rebuild - VMax SHO
I just picked up this little project and figured I would document it a bit. The motor is a Yamaha 250 SHO, it has a Hydrotec tune, and fatshaft lower. Unfortunately one of the connecting rods has left this world.
The project should be a winter project but I'm in no rush as I don't have a hull to put it onto yet.
I have no specific direction to take this motor right now, I'm playing with the idea of exploring some power adding modifications while I'm in there though.
The Plan:
1. Dissasemble & Asses Damage
2. Create Plan and Potential Parts List
3. Explore Power Adding / Longevity Options
4. Build
5. Paint?
6. Find Appropriate Hull?
Let me know.what you think and if you have any ideas on what direction to take it or who to talk to about machine work & modification.
Also, I'm not versed on the correct terminology for these motors..... is Pork Chop reserved for the V8 Mercs only, or do the Yamies fit in there too?............Chaz?

So I know the consensus here is that you never well don a gearcase, simply replace them. I'm just curious if anyone has some thoughts on this. It appears that only the trailing tip is broken off. It actually looks ground off, but I'm not sure how that would happen in that spot. Supposedly the previous owner left it trimmed down while pulling out at a launch and snapped that piece off.
Does anyone here think its ok to weld that?
There is also some damage to the rear part of the bearing carrier area. It looks like someone ran it without the prop spacer in and the prop chewed it up. I don't think it should really affect much though. Thoughts? Another option I have is to add the HydroTec blowout ring, is that needed, what purpose does that serve?
The next thing is the crack in the exhaust housing, I believe this was also from dragging the lower on the ground at the ramp. I don't think this should cause any problems but maybe someone has some input on that as well.
