I suppose it has something to do with exhaust pulses and acoustics.

A 3-cyl has just one set of well-timed exhaust pulses.

yeah man, my v4 sounded like bbc with mufflers on a dyno around 6k. my pmax sounds like a briggs with a loose blade. without the can, even stranger. dont get me wrong. im for o/b all the way, but i think they all sound bad. they sound weak. maybe im getting old. my family 4stroke is like getting in a caddy, YOU dont hear any moving parts, except the ice cubes in my drink.
