Any V6 Merc sounds good, as was said the early 2.0L motors had a great sound, first 2.4 200 I heard sounded pretty cool, same with the first 2.5 I heard. Best sounding is pretty much up to the individual.

^I've also watched that video numerous times, it's beautiful!

That being said, they're not consumer motors!

Go to 1:57 in the video below:

There's something about the sound the Merc 3 liter EFI makes when it's getting out of the hole. A real deep throaty note that the racing outboards don't even seem to have to this extent. Maybe I'll have to analyze the acoustic waveform and find out what it is haha

I like my old evinrude yachtwin 4hp. It sings, whistles, rings, hums, idk what it is about it but she's old and none of the new stuff comes close to sounding like these.

2.5 260 OS and 280 OS were consumer engines and to me there is no comparison and that is coming from a 300R owner...

You're not wrong about the loose parts haha. My grandfather sank it back in the day, scored the cylinder walls with sandpaper and threw it back together. She runs like a clock though!
The Chaparral we've been having a blast on it. It fits way more bikinis than any sport boat i've owned haha. Thats the perk. And my little dinghy RIB with the 20hp is my "Fun" toy now.

Best sounding engine to me is the one that gets you back on the trailer after a great week of camping in the glades. When you are 50 miles from the ramp you hear all the engine noises that make you go hmmm.

Best loud as holy hell engine has to be the bridgeports from the late 70's and early 80's with offshore exhaust. Bud of mine said he could hear me running mine hard over a mile away.

The 3.0 on my V-King is pretty sweet too. But not so loud it's obnoxious. Just a deep growl.

The Bridgeport motor had a unique sound for sure, one of my favorite.
