Go to the store and buy a a new truck ... $65,000.00

Go to the parts counter at the same store and order everything you need to assemble it yourself ... $390,000.00

In a nice utopian society , they would have every part in stock . Now lets look at your 260 . Just breeze up to the parts counter and order a new block , crank , and one piston / rod assy ...
Oopppsss ... if you can't buy parts for a motor in the most popular (2.5) outboard family ... ever.
What makes you think John / Rude is gonna stock parts to the ceiling , and flow out in UPS trucks with the greatest of ease ... next year, let alone a dime from now .

Because it is good business, and they have every incentive to sell parts as long as there is demand.

They don't need to stock parts to the ceiling - for many SKUs, they can forecast what they need and order accordingly from suppliers when they need them. It may surprise you, but suppliers keep making parts for products that are no longer sold new.

Again, the way to do this is proven in lots of industries that have continued to sell parts for models that are no longer sold.

Mercury stopped selling new 2.5 260s 23 years ago. There probably isn't enough demand for new parts to make it worthwhile for Mercury to keep making them. So owners have to make do with used parts and aftermarket parts.

Now, it may well be that Mercury isn't granular enough in its approach to deciding when to stop selling parts for different models, and that the race engines have viable parts businesses for longer than Mercury provides parts.

Back to Evinrude: I remember, many years ago, Brunswick's CEO told me that most of the parts business is gone after 7 years, which is why he thought BRP would give up on Evinrude much, much earlier than they did: OMC sales of new engines had fallen off a cliff, and parts sales (where the money is made) were facing a similar cliff. On the other hand, the 7 years he referred to is the rule of thumb used in the automotive industry. He may simply have picked it up from there.

Most of the people that you are second-guessing are competent executives that run these business quite well.

Mercury has never been a hippie collective building race engines to make the world a happier place. And OMC building the engine used by somebody's grandfather does not give the Evinrude name the right to live on forever.__PRESENT

Markie mark ,

Thanks for taking the time to explain to me , what I said to you a few posts earlier ..

Now that guy looks like a real world leader. If he didn't have his wife telling him where to go, he would be walking in circles like a Racoon with parvovirus. His secret security guy looks like he is ready to come stand him back up after he falls over. His walk is more of a stagger and she is so used to balancing him, she now does it in public I guess!!

Joe

There is so much to that picture ..

Everyone gets a custom mask .. The maybe POTUS .. gets a cheapie .

Your right , the SS detail is waiting for her to panic even worse , step in before they both hit hit the ground.

The X-VP looks to be telling her , I like the phones at this store, buy me the first one on my right .

The reporter girl with shades nestled in her hair .. has heard the whole thing and can't help from cracking up .

Sad day for the United States ..

A real kill-joy .. you are ...

Ok-Ok , so I spoke to G yesterday .. he said guys that worked there years ago went to the auction to get something out of their past . Maybe some tool's , parts they remember , wondering if some of it might still be there.
Everything sold for way over value .. he was kind on goin off about how one of the paint storage cabinets he wanted .. went for $300 dollars. It was funny .. you can buy a brand ****** new one from Northern supply for half that ...
Auction hysteria .. bro .

Hate to admit but i did bid on a few gearcase tools i guess partly to say they came from there... why i don't know, but like G said everything went for rediculously high prices. I was talking to Kevin on the phone and told him man i'm a cheap ass afraid to pay too much and he said no ur smart, lol... I think stuff will start showing up on ebay and you wont have to buy the junk along with the gold n silver... I buy stuff on Ebay all the time from sellers i have saved that buy big lots from govt auctions.

I use to go to the auction houses with my friend who was the used car manager at Stuart Nissan.
An Escalade would roll across the block .. guys would bid $ 8, 9, 10 K on it .. my friend would lean over and whisper .. I guess he didn't look at it real good, someone already got the LS3 , 4L80 box out of it and the whole right side is missing all the way back to the bent rear axle housing .. somebody give me 10~5 .. 10-5 .. how bout 10 and a quata , 10- quata, 10-quata .. sold to the gentleman for $ 10,000

Brutal if you don't know the market ...
