    Uhm, I beg to differ.

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, I still like/prefer and use plywood.

Plywood (wood in general) fails in a boat because it was installed improperly or one of its owners.....,installed a new motor, seats, speakers, etc, w/o sealing the screw/bolt holes which then wicked water and rotted from there.

I have a late 80’s’ 20’ Searay Laguna center console in my shop now w/rotted, glass wrapped wood stringers.
From the factory, they drilled drain holes in the bottoms of them and did not seal the now, rotted wood.
    The woods fault?
They scream, “no wood in boats”!

    Whatever.

How bout, no idiots build boats?

I raced 10’ hydroplanes that weighed 100 lbs and didn’t break at 70 mph.
    They were plywood.

They tried glass and everything else and none of them ran w/the wood boats.
Can still find those boats from the 40’s’.

Call me a dinosaur but I still like and use my plywood.

Built one A Stock Hydro (9’ 4”) with 5/8” x 5/8” spruce stringers that I dado’d the backs out of, skinned the bottom with 1/8” Okume mahogany plywood and built a plywood/honeycombed transom for it and weighed 57 lbs.
    And was smokin fast!

Match that w/glass and miracle core.

99% of all properly done restorations are stronger than original.
Dont need wizard core, just needs done right.

Take two PCs of 3/4” exterior plywood, w/half the number of plys as 3/4” Okume, put two layers of 2 Oz glass mat between them, saturated in box store bought polyester crap resin (no $100 a gal epoxy), screw both pieces together with 1 1/2” drywall screws and let it set over night.

The next morning, pull the screws and try to break the now single unit component and/or pry it apart.
    Then give me a call.

Ive done a bazillion motor boards/transom that way over the last 40 yrs and never had one come apart, crack, delaminates, rot etc.

    Wood ...

Laminar continuous flow composite construction with a high floatation to weight ratio.

Stands up well to cannon fire ..

Because of it's recent introduction in the boat building industry .. it is not recognized as a primary material ...

A few yrs back, one of the boat mags did a very will researched and written story on the composites/no wood vs wood in boats story.

Dont remember which ones but, one of biggest mfg’s using wood and one from the “zero wood in boat” side.

Basically mirrored what I wrote last night and both agreed, when both are done right, the non wood is more marketing than science.

Kinda like 30 yrs ago when Honda taught the world to hate 2 strokes

How about weight comparison. I'd like to take a little weight out of it to get the most speed as possible. I haven't researched it yet but I heard marine ply just went up in price alot.

    Weight...

On your project, negligible but normally an edge to plywood.

Ive been shocked by picking up the pieces of composite guys are using for motor boards!
Twice the weight of two layers of 3/4 ply sandwiched together!

    But we’re talking about 5 - 10lbs which your boat won’t feel.
And before lumber prices went insane, at triple the cost!

    Another reason I like wood.

Heres one most guys don’t think about.
    Resin content.
First off, everyone wants to go w/epoxy.
    Yay!
    Have fun $$$$!!!

My argument is always, done right, w/proper construction technique, wood w/polyester resin is plenty strong enough for what we’re doing.

90% of the pro epoxy fans come from guys that spent the night reading stories on the internet, written by guys that just did the same project w/epoxy.
So a novice is telling you it’s better

I recored a Hydrostream Vector a 100 yrs ago and relaminated in new balsa core and 3/8 plywood stringers full of lightening holes.
I kept a box w/all the plugs I drilled out of them and weighed it at end of project.
    I saved 1/2 if 1 lb!
And was a huge PIA to glass around.

In other words, a total waste of time.

Want to guess how many 11 lb gal’s of testing I used in the project??
I didn’t even do the transom.
This was a 17’ boat, for new core and stringers and I didn’t even put a floor in it....????

    ELEVEN!

So to save the weight the balsa gave me???
I used NINE just for the core!
    So 99 lbs of resin!

If I had vacuum infused it, I probably could have cut that in half!

A 50 lb weight savings on a 17’ boat that ended up being 543 lbs when done???
Ill let you do the math

Point being, if you take your time fitting your pieces (wood or core and cloth), only use enough resin to 100% saturate your laminated....., you’ll save more weight than anything else you do.

All those gaps between stringer/transom etc, that you fill w/resin???
Tons of extra weight that does zero for strength.

Where do I send the consulting bill

No but from what I’ve seen and think I know......., I think it’s a poor substitute for a real transom.

Ive gotten pretty good at mixing additives w/polyester resin and ended up w/something that I could cut threads into and torque a bolt into but, to pour it into a 1 1/2” void 20” deep and 24” wide and trust that its fully filling that void??
    No way.

Ive attempted to do that on much smaller jobs that I could see the results after the fact and have always been shocked at where my glue didn’t get to.

In that application your also limited to short fiber/laminate threads.
So your transom is now full of glue filled with 1/8” or 1/4” fibers Vs plywood that has grain running full length/width.

I guess on lower power/load applications it’s probably fine.

Here is a boat that Sam Cullis (Mark75H) gave me years ago. It was a wreck. Flexible flier no one could get it to run right. The transom was shot. I used a hammer. In a fiberglass boat I would used an electric chainsaw to cut the rotted wood out. Then using plywood soaked with resin and acetone mix sunk into the transom with body filler and 50% resin for flow. One shot deal: gotta work quick. JMO.

This is the same boat all fixed up. But this was at least 15 years ago. I went to a boat race with a 44 Merc and they wouldn't let me run that small motor. I built the motor for 66cid for this boat. At the same race I had built a 90 cid racing motor for Steve Cox that replaced his 76 cid Merc 800. I used my Hydrostream for a rest mule and they would not allow it to run. They would not allow me to run my 44 cid in the race. Only Japanese motors were allowed so my last day at any boat race was that day.
