    Mod VP Lower Unit

Is the Mod VP gearcase housing with the water intake just above the nosecone the same (i.e. interchangeable) as the Alpha SS housing? I have a NOS one and cannot find the number on it.

Sort of. You need to plug the transfer hole with a set screw.

...the capt. is refering to the oil passage hole in the top of the housing that allowed common outdrive oil to transfer from the upper drive to the lower gearcase when used on the alpha SS outdrive. never forget...when mercruiser sent me the first alpha SS unit(s) included in the new 454 magnum engine packages for install in some new 22 velocity's. those oil passage transfer holes in the gearcase housings were not drilled. yeah, had to replace those drives after testing...
