That is a job for a young back...and everything else. There is some good footage on youtube of omc torture testing in the 70's.

One of the boat mags did a story on the test drivers after interviewing two of them.
They basically said that after the first day in 90* heat and 90* humidity, you’re over it.
Or a day in the rain.
Mo, you would appreciate knowing that yrs ago a group of us and our boats were hanging out on the beach on Cayo Costa Island by Captiva when my buddy points out two Merc powered, bright yellow, 22’ Velocities coming our way.
I recognized them as Merc test boats and ran down the beach, pushed off my looper powered (bright yellow) Hydrostream Vector and chased them down.
Time I got underway they were passed us and out from behind the shelter of the island.
Fun water for them, **** for me.
I caught them anyhow and did a lap around them while waving at them
They both acted like they saw a ghost!
Nope.
Just a fast JohnRude.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Back in 1990-91, I saw the Evinrude test boats on the Indian River outside of Jensen Beach. The techs stopped me because I ran an Evinrude 200 XP on my Laser.

Supplying motors to a spec race class would have uncovered the same weak links and they wouldn't have to worry about the payroll or buying the hulls-

Probably, but the endurance test cycle is a very specific one-hour cycle repeated hundreds of times; shifting, certain rpm x time, logged, fuel use, ect.
Also, you can't replace/repair anything without it being examined by engineering first. That wouldn't be ideal for racers, really. And, it's not like they build dozens of motors to test... there were only 6 "pre-production" powerheads, gearcases, etc. available for dyno development/tuning and endurance testing.
Also, 8 hours of 40-degrees and pouring rain with huge whitecaps on Lake Winnebago in mid-October isn't awesome!
Uhh, this is what I've heard.
(At the end of the OMC video above, the driver says "it's the biggest waste of a weekend I've ever had here" because that's not how the testing is done.)

I get it that the calibration work, repeated cycle test for shift and idle stalls, log strikes, along with overall durability testing and inspection is much more involved--It was just an "off the cuff" statement for finding the weak links. I guess that is what racing and being in the hands of ignorance does after the product gets released.
I agree, running a boat and having to watch a screen at the same time to record data is not "enjoyable boating"--40 degrees lol..., I don't go out if its under 80 anymore (60 to 80 degree days are labeled for motorcycling) and under 40, I better be in the U.P. or Wyoming riding sleds.
