Thanks Lynn. I am going to disassemble this one and see what's wrong. Built the first tool now I need to know for sure is it a standard thread. In other words do I turn it counterclockwise to remove. Thanks.

Wow these things are unlike anything I am used to. Got the threaded piece out. Is the carrier supposed to come out just by pulling on the area built up around the prop shaft cuz this one is in there solid.

Three tools built successfully and all threaded components are out along with shift shaft. Prop shaft and drive shaft are still very solidly in place. Open to suggestions. Thanks

Got bearing carrier out and to my amazement the gears and bearings like new. Pinion in pieces but not terminal damage on drive shaft. I really need to see an exploded view of this thing as there is an item in the gunk I am not sure about and there is a small screw on the starboard side plus I want to know how to remove drive shaft. It will move about three inches. I assume the water pump has to be removed but it's a guess. Thanks.

Mr. Olegator you are correct again. I assumed they just needed pulled but I remember many moons ago as kids we fried my friend's dad's Johnson cuz we had no clue the difference tween 50:1 and 25:1 nor did we know that it was even a thing. Well we decided we should tear it down and fix it but with zero clue available we ruined every part we touched. Didn't want to do the same thing to something with an iffy parts availability.
So miraculously all I need is a pinion, seal kit, and an impeller. Anyone with parts to sell send a pm. If not I will go to discount marine. Also found what I believe to be a magnet in the case. Am I correct to assume it goes in the small hole at the bottom of the case directly over the skeg? If so what holds it there? Gravity. Thanks for the help.

I spent many yrs racing KG-4’s and MK 15’s (sane powerhead) and loved them.
We ran 15” mids w/Speedmasters of course but the rest the same.
The “H’s” blocks had the padded cylinders though giving more compression.
A trick though if you want to hot rod one is, take a MK 20/25 block/powerhead (15 Cu ins to 20, a 33% increase!) and bolt it to your MK 15/KG-4.
Impossible to tell from the outside!
Cool old motors.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Got it ready to go back together. Only question now is the magnet. Anyone know if it needs to be epoxied in or does it just sit in the hole. Thanks

It is likely most have never noticed it being there. Carrier has no locating device.

Anyone one have an opinion on the magnet? I will epoxy it in place later today. Gotta clear the bench.
