Really overpowering my boat
Hello, im thinking of really overpowering my boat. its rated for 90 hp, but i want to attach a 150-175-200 v6 on it. Because of the power and weight i am afraid my transom will give in. But i thought, if i use a tension strap and attach a couple of eyenuts on the upper engine bolts, and connect 1 end of the strap to the transom, and the other end to the skipole in the center (see photo), and really really tighten the strap, (it functions as a stringer) the engine will not pull only on the transom, but also on the skipole. This way the stress on the transom is reduced.
My question, will a tension strap work? Or doesnt it work well enough to hold the power of the v6. Or maybe i need steel threads and a tightener in between?

If your transom isn’t strong enough and NEEDs a strap to the ski pole, then this is not a good idea.

Absolutely, assess what it requires and make it safe.

If your boat is sound, than I would do it and have a blast.
I've been doing this my hole life lol.
We even put a 9.9 on a canoe when I was a young teen

I put a hopped up 70hp 3 cylinder OMC on a 15' aluminum jon boat rated for 25hp. Built my own tiller for the motor. You could only hold it to about 42 mph in a short burst, sure was fun though...

What he said ^^^^^^^
You can beef up the transom or add a knee or two with a stringer(s). But if the transom is not strong enough without straps or brackets, then do not do it.
ETA Not sure how the laws are over there, but some places on this side of the pond, if you knowingly overpower a boat and somebody gets hurt, you might be facing criminal charges. Just something to think about.Last edited by SS Minnow; 10-25-2020 at 07:15 PM.

Thanks! But the straps will add a lot of strength right? The skipole is very solid and the straps are rated for 1000kg

So this was my 1st way over powerd. It measured 14'9 and rated for 105. I had 2 115s a 140 , 2 150s, and 2 200s. My transom was pretty solid , as in no cracks no where and didn't flex , with 115. I put all thread thru transom into the back deck along with thick aluminum plates , the 150 did good and was still hard to drive at wot , when 200 went on it really didn't go no faster at wot because of the boat , but it would get to that speed faster the stern wanted to pass the front. I ran that boat for yrs like that. But the transom I started with was in decent shape
