Whalers all did ok by me. Any semi flat bottom boat will beat the snot out of you if not piloted by someone who knows the boats limits. Watch the haulover inlet vids and see a lil whaler run that sucker better than some much larger boats. They call it the "legend". Looks like an 18' Dauntless operated by a kid.... MFG's were always kina sketchy IMO.

from a design standpoint i think one thing no one can dispute is the stability sitting off plane from side to side movement, saying you could walk all around the boat and it still sit flat in the water vs a v bottom that leaned with the transfer of weight. now ,,, look at what Mastercraft is marketing in the wakeboard market for somewhere in the neighborhood of 120k , just sayin

True, but what he's talking about has nothing to do with chine walk. He's talking about the ability to walk around a (stationary) boat and not have it rock from side to side.

I had a 17 whaler with a 140 omc looper 23p omc chopper srx and it ran good. 63? Same boat with bait boxes on the stern ran 70? with a bridgeport carb motor. It seems the tri hulls are a design that limits top speed due to wetted surface drag. Surprisingly, my lil whaler ran with 20' lake and bays with slightly less hp. And they are a fast hull.

    Second that!
my buddy ran an old 2.0 150 mercury on the newer style 17’ whaler
    Hydraulic jack plate/chopper prop
been almost 30 years but I’m pretty sure it ran 67mph
aired out in a mild chop
    talk about air entrapment!
unfortunately one day it was not so much a mild chop
we were wondering why we couldn’t get the nose up
turned around to see the transom split with the motor barely hanging on
tied the motor of to the console an limped home
    aah... the good old days

We had one of these when I was a kid ...

    From Carol C. in 2012 ....

Actually the Woodson Boats with the dual cathedral hull came after Thunderbird. Woody lost Thunderbird company to his ex-wife in the divorce settlement. He started Woodson Boats in Coral Gables right behind Deel Ford off Ponce. I was married to his wife Pat's brother. The company did very well for a long time, but many things were happening to Woody. Pat became very ill, Woody had tax issues and he moved the entire company to Barbados. Shortly after moving there, he was diagnosed with cancer himself and he died there. Pat died shortly before or after him in South Miami (sorry, I can't remember the timeline, it was back in 1970). His boats are classics that's for sure. You are lucky to have one! Woody would pay a fortune to build the mold for his boat only to have a rival boat building simply buy one of his boats (which was much, much less expensive than building the mold) and extend a railing or embellishment an inch here or there which would void the original patent. That's why he moved it all to Barbados, because it was much cheaper to live there. But once he became so ill, there was no one to continue the work.

I remember this logo on the side ...

    History of Formula boats ....

My dad had a buddy named "woody Woodson" that he camped the Flamingo area with. I remember the name and his boat had his last name on it. I wonder if that was him? Fla was a small place back then....It seemed my pops knew everybody to me as a kid..

My father bought a 15' Glastron tri-hull back in the early 70s, 73 maybe? 70hp 3 hole Evinrude. I was in my early teens at the time. I had a ton of fun with it. It would hit the waves hard, no doubt about it. I eventually cracked the hull jumping it through some big waves. Almost swamped it that day. I think one of the big advantages was the walk through windshield and seating up front.

I had the 15 galaxy which had a step hull I had a merc 850 and it would run a whopping 32 felt like 50. And big girls did giggle did I say giggleI paid 400 with a trailer for the 74 hull and that was 1990 Had original tires and they swelled up and just made it to the house. I think that and the Mach 1 cuddy (stabbing cabin)were the most good time boats I've had.

    Yep.

If you understand what they are, and their limitations, they could be a decent boat.

As listed above, Whalers are tri hills and are legendary.

    I like tri hulls.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I'm thinking my dad may have bought the Thunderbird from Woody and they met then. Dad and his bro had the only large tire sales, service and repair shop from Tampa to Miami in the 60's.

I had an OLD 18 foot Duo with a 90 Chrysler. It ran 36 wide open 24/7 with four people. Perfect for slalom. Road stable, dry, and Rough.
Had a 18 foot Winner tri-hull, it did nothing good.
