    Fabricate nose cone?

I searched everywhere and aside from a few guys who sand cast their own nose cones I didnt see any fabricated ones, why not? Seems easy enough to shape and weld up one out of 1/8" aluminum plate. I got to thinking about this because the land and sea LWP I have seems a little too large for my V4 lower unit. Doesnt look like theres much option for a good V4 cone so.... fabricate time? It seems odd to me that I couldnt find anyone who had already done this. Hence this thread

Bob's makes an "inline" size cone that will fit the V4 pretty good. Here's the fabricated cone for my 18 hp Evinrude project:

The pickup is pretty high due to the split case housing. Half the reason is that the original water pickup out back had to be cut off for prop clearance!

your idea is a good one... would be a good project... I myself would like to make my own cone for my 3 cylinder motor as here in the uk we dont have any where that sells them , they can order but the prices then are astronomical due to postage customs and taxes.... ive seen a few people make there own cones from epoxy type materials and have has some very good success and use these at pretty high speeds ( 70mph to me is pretty high speed for a 3 cylinder omc 56. here is a look at how one particular one I know off being made up and end product... as you can see he first done one, then decided to do another with a low water pick up. the results are very good and these are not my pics but a fella called Jani Hupiveneilijä Ravantti....

Props can be cut to size and re-hubbed to suit your output shaft but the face of the prop with regard to the thrust washer and whatnot may also need to be customized and machines. It’s really more about the diameter limits your lower unit can clear, because the rest of the parameters can be modded to fit.

I like the idea of casting a cone with epoxy I think that could work quite well. I was also thinking by fabricating one it would be easier to control the length which is an issue with smaller power motors due to drag and whatnot. This build I’m putting together should run in the 70’s and that’s pretty much the wall for needing lwp or not. I think even if I lost a mph or two if I surface the prop the handling and chine walk will be much better and worth the effort.

I have a raker and a bunch of Merc props I may cut and re-hub a chopper. All sounds like fun that’s for sure

Great job on the nosecone. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into that and how it came out. I find it much more rewarding than just going out by or something. Great job

Mazco sells a slim cone apparently that fits the v4 lower the best. Bobs inline also fits ok from what I’ve read. No personal use on either yet

I was researching and saw some comments on it. They don’t advertise it but sell ( or at least sold ) them called mazcone. Give em a ring and see

Its self made w/lwpu. I wanted it to behave quite neutral, because we run most often on a rough water. So it dont push down, just go through.
