    1956 Elgin

I have a 1953 Carter Craft with a 1956 Elgin 25 horse. Motor runs fine but lower unit is leaking from the weep hole pretty good. Am I dreaming thinking maybe a guy could still get a seal kit and if so where. Great little period correct rig (boat looks great) that I don't wanna see disabled. Thanks

Check with discount-marine-parts.com. They have listed in particular.....your Elgin motor. There's a phone number to call and an email. Best of luck!

And as mentioned above, this place. It lists three different models of 25 for that year.

Good to see what you are trying to do. Good luck finding what you need.

Wow, that is sweet. I am equally impressed with the trailer and it's obvious minimalist construction. I have never seen a trailer that small.

discount-marine-parts.com has what I needed. Thanks again for the leads. This motor has an unusual feature. On the cowl there is a key that will lock motor or allow one of three horsepower settings. Either 7.5, 15, or 25. I imagine it is just a limit on the throttle. The throttle linkage is a bit more unusual. It consists of a cable running thru 4 or 5 pulleys and actually goes around the trigger for advance. I'll try to get pics once boat is returned for repair. Thanks again for the help.

That is sweet for sure as I get older memories of wood boats shows my age. My second boat was very similar to that but it was hand make at a small marina on the Jersey coast.

My Dad bought a solid Mahogany Superboat with a 25 HP Buccaneer [OMC] that we kept in the water behind our house to ski behind. My Siblings and I let it get rain water inside and it rotted quickly. It had to be about the same year as yours.

Lower unit is off, cleaned, and reassembled. Question is do they use the same 80/90 as a Merc or is it possible they use something much heavier. I ask cuz this is what the gearcase was packed with. Pulled plug and nothing so assumed all oil had leaked out as there was a puddle of oil after sitting in the shop overnight. This stuff is like pudding or maybe more like the lithium you buy in a tub. I know lube and water mixed will look similar however this thing has set for a couple years and there was no separation of oil and water.

Long story. Auto mechanic friend calls and says his girlfriends dad has a boat with issues and wants me to look at it. I agree and the above boat comes to my shop. Says linkage is a mess and needs help. I have never seen anything like it but figure it can't be that tough. Fix cable on pulleys and find the controls are hooked up wrong. Get that taken care of and that is when I see the lower leaking. Before this motor went on the boat it had a 25 Merc that lost the prop, prop shaft, and carrier while on a cruise. The guy had no money for a lower so he mounted the Elgin. I agreed to take the 25 as payment for fixing the linkage and lower unit. 25 Merc runs good so I swap out the one on my fishing jon. Few days later tis guy calls looking for a starter kit, as in electric starter, cuz he can't pull the Elgin with bad shoulders. I feel bad for the guy and told him I would give him my old 25 for the Elgin. Got it mounted and he will now be able to boat again. So now I own a 25 Elgin. Check out the advance mechanism and the key for horsepower. That cable goes around the top of motor and rotates a plate to advance timing.
