    40 to 16 amp advantage

I have the 40 amp system on my Promax with the red 40 FLEXPLATE flywheel. Not the cast. Will there be any sort of advantage to switching to the 16 amp flex? Or is it very minor?
Whats the weight diffrence between the 40 FLEX and the 16?

I think the change is negligible in power. It’s really for if you are starting to spin some higher rpm....the big flywheels are awful hard on cranks above 7k.

That's exactly the benefit. Reduced load on the top crank bearing! I don't run 40 amp on any of my junk but I'm fond of 2:1 lowers and 22 props...

the red flywheel is the one you want for 40amp, if you are keeping it below 8k rpm.

The lighter flywheels will spin up faster with shorter props and lighter boats.

how heavy is the boat, what size prop and rpm you turning the most and what electronics are you running are the questions you need answered to decide if one is better than the other.

16amp ain’t worth a fudge if you can’t keep your batteries charged all day running electronics.

spin a 40 amp to high to much and you can all kinds of problems to though, from constantly frying regulators, chunking magnets, breaking cranks etc.

40 amp for fishin motors on reg boats imo.

Depends on what you do. I don't run any electronics to speak of. Temp alarm, water pressure and tach are all I run on any of my rigs, sometimes a small chart plotter with gps speed. Even then I can run all day (12-16 gallons) pop a powerhead and use my starting battery to troll all the way across the lake back to the ramp (old 12v 45lb troller). All on 9 amp charge.

If you require 25 gauges, 4 12"+ fish finders, 2500 watts of stereo, disco ball, 2 power poles, 48 v trolling motor, etc you should be on the BBC board...

Your “efi “ electronics play a roll in this too, if you are carbed or running 260 electronics it doesn’t drain as much as laser efi does.

boat stripped of most junk and laser electronics with a 16 amp and too far of a run can drain the battery down.

On three hour after work night night tournies I could run 16 amp, but an all day tourney or an all day boat ride with a lot of miles the 16 amp takes its toll.

Me and a buddy on here just did a 40 to 16 swap , he gained 5mph with 2 people loaded to the gills and seem to charge good all day with laser system , these are gps #s that r very consistent every time out. I know it seems like alot but the #s didn't lie. We was both kinda surprised in the diffrence. He also runs his 2 giant graphs off separate battery and only runs motor and guages ,trim on starting battery

So I know this thread is a little older, but.

I've had voltage regulator problems all summer.

They only tend to blow out on me if I am on the rev limiter (225 pro max, seems to have a pretty evident 6800 RPM limiter, or I have other problems?) or near it for long periods of time.

    Stock 40 amp charging.

New this last go-round, CDI Stator, VR's, Trigger, checked all wire connections in boat (Brand new harness and brand new tach harness), Brand new Gaffrig Tach, Lead Acid Battery, etc.

Set timing on motor to 25* @wot Per JSRE instructions posted by Whipper years ago on another thread. (it was actually already there dead on, I didn't do anything other than mark/check all ), no oil injection, no idle module box thing, - bought motor on a 1 piece adapter/offshore mid, moved it to my 1 piece adapter 280 'bass' style mid. Engine has 125 psi on every hole per my gauge.

I see comments about long runs on 16amp electrics not being enough to run the EFI computer and anything extra in the boat......

When I run I sometimes use radio, sometimes don't (currently old 4 speaker (6.5's) kenwood system with no amp, I plan to upgrade head unit and speakers, but do not plan to add an amp), I also have a garmin 9" screen w/depthfinder.

I don't use any electronics when parked.

Will the 16amp struggle to run my EFI box?

16 amp seems worth it to me for the lighter flywheel, less VR issues @ higher RPM. Curious on anyone's thoughts on my electronics load and if a 16 amp can carry it?
