I hope them the best.Lots of interest and deep pockets. Just don't see it happening over here. All the previous post confirms this.

the only plus I can see is that they are still have a J class to kids to race, if you don't get kids involved, there is a time limit to your racing. I've had drag racers complain that the number of boats keep going down every year, but then do nothing to bring younger people into the sport. In other sports, I've had guys give me their old equipment to help draw me into racing with them. In boat, as was pointed out, they ether hog their old stuff, or try to screw someone with junk. No saying that is right or wrong, but your not going to bring in new racers that way.

J class racing could continue without the APBA for a long time, if families wanted to put the effort into it. Getting somebody else's junk seems to be a common problem in any motorsport. I got tired of being depended on to make a class (number of boats) so somebody else could get the blue ribbon. Staying home got to be the practical alternative to working my tail off only to get beaten every weekend. When it boils down to hard work all the time its no longer fun or a hobby.

I was on the opposite side of that to a degree. I was in a different sport, got lots of help to get me into the sport, but then I started to look fast. So ended all the help and anyone offering me any parts at any cost. And then they wanted to know why I wouldn't show up to race. I get it, but then I don't What is the point of being the best or fastest if your racing all alone?

In Europe they stick to the UIM party line which is the Merc party line, the day after an engine is no longer sold the class stops racing.
Huge amount of old race stuff in sheds in Europe.

I totally agree...........the blue ribbon winners found themselves registering for races by themselves in the end. These same blue ribbon drivers were also the ones who failed to nominate the guys who signed up to make a class, (got beaten or traveled to races they didn't want to attend) in the local racing club for at least a "sportsmans" award? I had no regrets in quitting 25 years ago.

Merc helped by making a purpose built engine to kill the class

Its my understanding that the F1 boat are going to all new boats because of the weight difference of a four stroke. So if that doesn't kill the APBA, i don't know what will. OMC is gone, Mercury 2.5 will be gone as soon as the last crank is sold. We are all going to be vintage race soon no matter what, unless you can afford a new hull

poor corporate decisions create the aftermarket market and hence the industry that goes with it.

2 inboard drivers have been killed this year. City of Long Beach has said there will be no more events held there. Vintage won't last unless you are willing to idle around in parade laps. Older stuff could still be used if you want to lug around ballast to make minimum weight. Mercury racing won't support the old SSM (#4, #6) lower units either. The 4 stroke case is completely different.

I'm not a historian, but didn't Long Beach already do that once? Too dangerous, too loud, not enough money to be made. My dad race back in the 50's in Wisconsin. (knee down boats) I've been amazed at the places he said they used to race at. very different times. Each time I see a drag race the track get shorter. 1/4 mile, 1000 feet, 800 feet. that path also only has one ending. and they wonder where illegal racing come from.

APBA and OPC have no vision and this is a great example. OPC should just be called the Vintage Outboard Performance Category. Nothing like a two stroke but it’s time to move on.

dirty old tech 2 strokes? what are they running in the hydros? battery's? Or are they running 60 year old 4 stroke automotive based engines. Nothing better than jumping on the band wagon.

I brought that up on their post, whoever handles the account seemed pretty butthurt about it. Anyone, ANYONE that races ANY vehicle has no place talking about "dirty" anything or emissions in any way. If you were/are in any form concerned about emissions or the environment one would not be racing an internal combustion engine of any form.
