    Hook repair question

I have a hook in the bottom on my jetboat, its on both sides so I'm guessing its factory. I'm planning on removing it. This is my plan, flip boat, using a 4 foot flat edge, mark out the offending areas. grind off the gel coat in that area. Using West Epoxy, fill the 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep area with cloth, finish the area with a little filler, or gel coat. If I go with filler, I'll finish with paint. I talked with my fiber glass guy (who I can't afford) he said there is a trick to all this to make sure the repair stays in place at speed. But wouldn't tell me. What am I missing?

I would be hesitant to fill in that big of a hook. The builder must have had a reason for it being there. As far as application, grind down hull, wipe clean and apply some filler with glass fibers added to the mix. . Sand to shape. Cover with glass. All filler thicker than 1/8'' needs to be covered in glass going past the filler edge. I would use vinylester for filler and glass. 1.5 oz matt would work as a covering glass. Option #2...If you find you need to fill 1/2'' deep you might consider using a 3/8'' structural foam sheet bonded to the hull sanded to shape leaving it short 3/16'' or so for covering glass. Could use some 1708 and 1.5 oz mat for covering glass. JM2cts And as always doing bottom mods is at your own risk.

Is this hook from sitting on a roller trailer or is it from the factory? I always thought that you really should not mess with a factory hook.

I talked with the factory. It was put in for safety ish. problem is that the boat runs 50 mph, so at that speed, its shoving the bow in, lifting the stern, and making it very unstable. the boat, with a jet drive, just wants to spin. I might just try to remove some of the back edge to reduce the hooks effect. and everyone points out, the boat works right now, don't want to kill it.

I think you are on the right track. Small changes tried, before complete re-design begins.

I measured my boat today with a 4 foot straight edge. on the driver side, there is a 1/2 hook, passenger side is 3/8. I'm assuming this is for driving by yourself. dam bottom looks like its got trim tabs built in to the bottom.

At Action Marine we always got the bottoms as flat as possible and then put small trimtabs on them. Then a little testing to find out how much hook the boat really likes. My experience was a little bit right at the back of the running surface was usually a bit faster than dead flat.

I got to wonder why. my thought is to make the bottom flat, and then add a adjustable ride plate.

I bet it porpoised like crazy without the hook. But I could be wrong. Just a guess why they hooked it so severely.

Thanks, I never thought of that. I'm now going to have to push to see if I can get a hold of some one at searay to find out why they but that much of a hook into it. This is a 16 foot F16 sea rayder with the 175 sport jet in it. I've always have been more thinking that it was done for safety. So some kid didn't flip the boat over, and to slow the boat down.

It is a jet drive? They are always stuck to the water so the hook probably doesn't matter. Jet boats are a different kind of animal.

yes and no. the jet does need to be fed, the the hull is still a hull. I know a lot of manufacturers lean on the safe side like a lot of the bass boat with the engine mounted too high so you over trim it and blow it over. but because of that, you can spin them out.
