I heard Simon is getting sued by Merc, don't know if it's true or not? I sent two Ecu's to them, they can't do anything! They can't check rev limiter, they can't remap, nothing. This isn't good for us.

Exactly , it was brought to my attention last week and I said no way , but its true . I surmise what pissed merc off is that these companies where reflasing the newer 4 stroke stuff . If I was capable I would simply buy used ECU's then reflash and sell as 300 x type

OK , I give up . What EPA regulations and hardware have been used since 1970 to present have been applicable to the outboard motor. I'll wait
Where does it say , No aftermarket PCM's are allowed on any outboard from 1970 to present .. still waiting
Now I can see where Merc would cave into big gov and say : We converted to the four stroke to run cleaner emissions. If you find a new smog hog with our factory hardware .. it has to be modified and our proprietary information has been hijacked to do so .
Now that we have ratted out a few villain's , you'll extend the date where we have to install catalytic converters on anything larger than 150 hp ... right .
But the great news is if your 300x loses a PCM . It's still available ...
#32 ) List's for "only" $2341.36 You can buy one today for "only" $2097.04

My electronic nerd friends say .. yea , it's got about $40 dollars worth of Radio Shack garb inside ... figures ..

https://www.epa.gov/regulations-emis...quipment-tools
The smaller motors have had easier guidelines for output levels but everything that is produced by a "manufacture" is to be epa compliant. There is serious data and provisions taken to make the new product fall within guidelines of regulated air pollutants and receive a "COC" certificate of conformance. Manufactures don't want the risk of their product not being compliant "a lot of which is done via ecm calibration" so when they have someone in the aftermarket world changing their product and its coming back on them, the stuff will be stopped. They also deal with warranty claims that might not have taken place under the oem calibration.
Talk to Simon, Gale Banks, Dave Bush or any others that were commonly doing re mapping and see what they tell you. "Nobody wants the E.P.A. and their resources to be in their business". This will become a black market deal until someone pays big and it scares everyone off. Here is an example of what I am talking about
Its not just the big guys that are getting nailed. They are coming to small shops that modify motors or sell motors that they produce or import and as you can see they are paying big (browse and read some of these cases). They charged Bad Boy mowers 212K in 2014 and they were using unmodified Kawasaki and Kohler motors (so you know who they went to next-the manufacture). Look at what Mercury paid in 2015 for selling 3 motors (not intended for U.S. sales but sold them out as not currents to one of their dealers) and they were caught without the "COC"--92K plus probably another 30K in legal cost (no wonder new stuff gets scraped-way cheaper)

Anyone want guess how long before the common Yamaha tuner and or its dealer network gets clubbed over the head with a fine and cease and desist notification?

This is only one branch of hundreds that has become an overpowering revenue monster. Vote appropriately is all we can do....if these lefties had it their way (we will have "all electric", and no cows) then how do we dispose of the old batteries? --could become reality if the "silent majority don't get out to the polls in person". These laws only get put into effect by the representatives that we hire (study up on who you are voting for) and don't give them the chance to clamp down on us any harder.
