But also, they don't use the old mechanical, gear-driven oil pump... so why?

Someone with better knowledge may chime in. But if I understand correctly, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, and oil is injected elsewhere for lubrication. If you premix, everything below the top of the piston will completely miss out on any lubrication since the fuel/oil mix is not traveling through the crankcase.

for example, the rod bearing caps on an oil mixed injection has a hole for collecting oil from the passing mixed fuel. the new oil system has no hole thus no oiling of the rod bearing. stay with the newer oil system.
