    Progression classifieds

Im about 90 days away from purchasing a boat. I feel like a 27 Progression Is a really good choice for me, there just aren't many around. Is this the best classifieds section to monitor?

Call Kevin at Progression. He keeps pretty good tabs on his boats. He might know of one for sale that may not even be listed or the owner is thinking of selling...

You might want to check on Offshoreonly.com too. 27' Progressions are pretty rare, but great boats.

    The first one's gone.

The second one is interesting. A newer (vacuum bagged) 24LD with a 502 like that should run low 80's. Maybe the current owner doesn't know how to drive it. The colors are classic. I wouldn't give you 2 cents for any Venture trailer. (And a 2015 trailer in salt water doesn't look like the picture anymore.) It doesn't look like it has trim tabs and they really do help on that hull. Definitely a salt water boat with all of the issues that come with that.

The Sonic would be slower - but a real wave crusher. It doesn't look as clean as the Progression and you have your work cut out for you finding motors and rigging it. Stand up bolsters are a plus if you run in rough water. A fresh water boat is a big plus.

It could probably handle a pair of 300's - in the right hands. The big question is whether or not the driver could handle the boat. It's also going to require a good deal of playing with the setup since the boat was never designed for motors that powerful.

Remember, 2.4 and 2.5 liter motors are at least 100 lbs. (per motor) lighter than newer 300's. That's a pretty decent difference hanging that far off of a bracket.

Did the 27 posted last month sell already, hasn't been much action in the thread. I'd stick with outboards especially in that size range. There's a couple 27 activators posted, great running hull

Pair of 4 strokes will be a no no. Unless you mean either yamaha 300's or the new v8's. 2.6 Verados will be too heavy.

The 27 is considered Progressions flagship boat. That info comes from a pretty reliable source.

I’ve owned two 24’ Sonic OBs, both w/twin 250 hp JohnRudes at 450 lbs per.

    It handled that weight beautifully.

An issue w/that particular model is, they intended the aft seat base to be the reinforcement to the inside of the transom.
Problem arises from that base is foam cored and is tabbed to transom w/glass from the the foam to transom.
So when you beat on the boat, the tabbing pulls off the foam allowing the transom to flex which then causes the deck to crack where it transitions from side deck to transom cap.
Both of mine were like that when I bought them and every one I’ve seen was same.

As to your comment re. being in the right hands, I couldn’t agree more.
A Sonic dealer in NY warned me of that when I started shopping for one.
I left for NY the next day

Contrary to that is several owners I’ve spoken to over the yrs, that have been scared silly by them.
One took his local mechanic for a ride to help him dial it and he about put it on the rocks.
He said it was a death trap and told him to convert it to a single.
Which he did, which he hated.

The issue comes from the hull having a round keel. As in, no pad, no pointed vee.
So yes, above about 55 it will keep you on your toes.

    Now a single 450....

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

So can I get some feedback on the driving experience of the outboard 27 Progression. Is it fun to drive? Is it a lot of "work" to drive? Is that experience vastly different with 250XS/300XS? 4 strokes?

    Just trying to educate myself
