Looper ignition: CDI vs Yamaha swap
Did a search and found only one thread talking about this with not really the direct answer I'm looking for.
Looks to me I might have a bad power pack on my 96 3.0 Looper. I might have a line on a Yamaha donor motor to do the swap but was curious about the CDI setup.
I can get the CDI Powerpack for $400cdn and drop it on and be done (for now? Until stator melts or something else...) or with some farting around go to the Yamaha ignition setup.
Looking for opinions. Is it worth the extra effort to do the swap? How does the CDI run compared to the Yamaha?
Anybody have any top bearing plates kicking around? Or what to tell my machinist to adapt the yammy plate to my motor?

Contact Freddie Webb on here they are making the top caps for them & should be able to machine the flywheel for you as well or where to get it done...

IF you have facebook look up warrior performance. The yamaha system is more reliable than the omc cdi component's, I personally never had one of the setups but from what I heard from most of the go-fast Omc guys that used them before going full standalone Ecu's never had issues and could turn up to 9k with those systems.

FYI, I'm not talking about OEM CDI, I'm talking about CDI Electronics: https://www.cdielectronics.com/product/113-6212/
I'll check out warrior performance. Thanks.

It isn't much difference in my opinion to be honest some people have had good luck with the CDI (Rapair) units over the omc OEM ones but also lots of people will say they haven't had much luck with either one over the other compared to the Yamaha system hands down the Yamaha and that's coming from a OMC die hard but truth be told you do have some people that have had some OEM cdi units on their engines for years without issues.

My opinion. The yamaha ignition is a little better as far as performance goes because they retard a little as the rpm goes up. This allows you to run more timing at idle and still spin rpm. The biggest difference is with respect to reliability. The Yamaha ignition seem to last forever.

Don't know if you have got what you are looking for but it might be worth a try to contact Bob Cotman I think around Troy Missouri as he is the one who developed this swap way back in the 90's. He could really make these OMC fly. Was also a pretty successful drag racer as well lol. good luck

Unfortunately I sold the boat. This will have to go on hold until I replace it after the ice thaws...
