Sounds like a really fast boat. Make sure the steering is up to snuff.

Never heard of a stern drive with a 3 speed transmission, unless you count Forward, Neutral, and Reverse as a speed. Interesting concept though.

No need for a 3 speed. Just something else to go wrong. Its best to have the engine all the way back. Those are great hulls and a drivers boat.

    Yep

I remember when they came out.

They were on of the faster single IO cats.
They were really pushing the speed envelope and I think we’re into the 130’s, 20 yrs ago!

The owner of the company was the real deal and unfortunately died in an accident pushing that limit.

I think he was into mid/high 140’s which I remember thinking was only being run by the big boats at the time.
I was of course a huge fan of that.

When he went over, I believe another key company owner was with him and that was the end of the company.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Certainly looks like one, with a 9” converter too. That thing ought to launch real hard with the right prop on it.

Back in the spring of 2002 I was with The PowerBoat Television show and we went to California to test a 24 HTM (Hi Torque Marine).
If I remember we ran about 122 mph with some monster engine that did not last very long. Mark Rotharmel was driving and I was tucked under the passenger side deck with stop watch & GPS speedometer.
The owner Mike Coloumbe (sp) and engine builder Ken Lane were very interesting to say the least.
When they were killed on Lake Cassita they were in their prototype 30 footer (with no interior-no seats) and were running well over 140 trying to get to 150. We were scheduled to go back to California to test the 30 footer once they got one built and running to spec.

There were 4 people in the accident and all were killed.

Steve was the owners name. Castaic was the lake. "Our brothers lost"

I had a 98' SR, with right around 800hp. The SR had a little more head room than the SS, looks like you have the SR also. Mine ran right 104-107. Under 60mph (50-55) they are heavy in the front and like to bow steer. Once you are over 60, they lighten up and handle well, although they are not the best in the rough, not the worst either. Build quality was good, had a couple stress cracks on the deck but that's it, and the interior was nice. I loved under the deck and all of the spots for storage. I have never seen one with a transmission and a 3 drive though? I don't know if that's going to throw off things so I cannot comment.
HTM had a tough rep for awhile, but I never understood why. They are drivers boats for sure, but nothing crazy. There is a guy on IG I follow that has a BAD ASS, HTM 24SS, White Lightning. I believe he runs a 1300hp Teague motor with a modified Teague Bravo drive that runs close to 140 I believe. It takes a set and runs straight as an arrow.

I forgot about there being 4 in the boat.

I remember after the fact, the family of the the three passengers going after the wife for liability and thinking, she’s not even being allowed to grieve and being forced to deal w/this.

One of the many stories reminding me of those left behind to deal w/our actions.

Thank you for the corrections. It was 2002 when we were there in California (a long way from home - Ontario, Canada).
We did our testing and TV shoot on Lake Elsinore. My first (and only time) in California and it was cool and raining.

We were also at the factory that I if I remember was in or near Santa Clarita.
