McCall Racing - From Class D to The Fowler (circa 1980s)

Durning the early-1980s the late-John was powering his early race boats with OMC loopers and they we "...stable and safe at speed" - he said. He built a modified step pad-hull with hand laid 'glass strength

It brings back great memories to see a picture of Felix Poppell in a race boat. I met Felix at my very first boat race and we were friends the whole time I raced. We competed in SE for years and had many great races. One of my most vivid memories was of a heat of SE at the Marine Stadium. We finished so close that when we went to the infield we didn't know which had won. We just laughed and said "let's just do it again". A great racer and the guy who sold me the motor with which I won my only National Championship

Boat #790 is Bobby Drewery and I think also #701. Those boats would have been owned by Paul Angel. You can see his business name" Capitol Marine" on the 701 boat. The boat with the stacks was owned an run by a big fellow from Virginia named Wally? Don't remember a last name for him. Three of the pictures in the second row are of the same boat. The first is from a print ad for Mercury the other two are shots from testing of that boat. One of those looks like it might have been taken at Lake Maggioie in St Petersburg. The un numbered SE boat was originally built for an Evinrude dealer in Miami I purchased it from him in 1968 and ran it for a while but it wouldn't carry my weight. here is shot of it running.Click image for larger version.

Last photo image.........How did the SJ class manage the transition of Merc 1250BPs to stock short shaft ski motors (1250, 1350, 1400,1500, 1500XS)? Did OMC try running anything against the 1250BP in SJ?

Simple, they outlawed the 2 year legal BP a year before they all broke. OMC owned the 89 ci classes before Carl put the BP on the course - the FGS X-115/GT-115 taking everything in stock gearshift I classes in 1967 is the reason for the BP to exist at all.

So how, exactly do you "outlaw" an engine? Delete all references to it in the rule book or have specific wording saying they are not legal for a class? Were racers in the I class allowed to run in SJ? I was never impressed with the APBA OPC rule book. The safety cell rules and specifications was a train wreck and the overlap rule bred more accidents than it prevented.

normal rule changes were proposed by opc racing commission, put on ballot, voted by opc members. the variable in this case, was FOR SAFETY REASONS. all crookedness was not in washington dc, at that time.

No. That is actually Ed Hauptner. The reason he is sitting dead in the water is because his motor threw a timing belt. The 44s of that vintage had a problem with timing belts being too loose. Took me several months to find a solution. I did not share that solution with my competitors. Here is another picture of Ed and also Robert Stewart in the boat I ran in SE at Nationals in 1973. I was not aware of the trouble they were in at the time. That is my motor just going out of frame on the right. credit for picture to the Rabes.Click image for larger version.
