    1997 evinrude 225 timing issue

    Hi guys,
ive got an issue that’s stumping me. I had a stator melt on me 6 months ago and since then I’ve been throwing parts at this motor. It’s got a miss at idle And I’ve lost about 5 mph, My current trouble is in order to get it to idle at a high enough rpm, the timer base has to be about 1.5” Away from the stop. I’ve verified the timing advance, it’s advancing and the full advance is at 16deg.
today I decided to reset everything and do a link and sinc. That put the timer lever back where it has been in the past but it won’t even start.
    what am I missing?
    Compression is 100-110 on all
new parts(yes I did the throw parts at it thing)

    new:
    powerpack
    stator
    timer base
    coils
    coil wires
    plugs
    new reed valves
rebuilt carbs ( I’ve checked them 3 times, they are good)
New fuel pump ( replaced the original after 23 years!)

    what have I missed?

By the way other than a slight miss and lost top end, it runs just fine.

I suspected that too. I took it off and there’s no loose, cracked outer magnets and the inner “notches” looked like they were at 2oclock and 7oclock. I thought that was correct so I moved on? How can I check this again?

Have you checked the spark with a proper spark checker?

ive thought over and over about the V.R. I couldn’t make myself change it because it is charging and the tach is working. I’ll change it. Can anyone explain to me why it would cause my issues? Just so I Learn something? Thanks a bunch.

Since they are water cooled if the block is not full of water it can overheat VR and that can affect charging coils on stator and that in turn can affect the ignition coils. Since your stator melted it would be worth a try, or unhook it and try it, Anytime a stator melts I always replace the VR and most of the time they are blown up.
