Funny you mention boats.net, it’s the first place I went to for this part. When I type my serial# (6619976) it comes back with no matching results. When I type in 1985 175hp Mariner it shows 2 options (175 ELPTO) or (175 EXLPTO) the stators available are a 9amp part# 5454A7 $280.00 or a 15amp part#5454A35 for $265.00 and only one option for the trigger for these two models part#96455A9. My motor only has a serial#6619976 and nothing ELPTO or EXLPTO. Unless there’s another way to cross reference my serial# on boats.net I’m SOL.

Merc, I posted some pics of the flywheel (olive drab green) and pics of stator, you can see how the insulation on the yellow wires is shot all the way to the underside of the stator. I’m guessing with the condition of the stator wires the motors performance
Would be hampered. Anyway from what your saying I need the 9amp stator because I have the green flywheel. Correct? The 9amp stator part# 5454A7 from boats.net is $280, does this price seem right? They want $265 for the trigger, just under $600 combined. Ouch! B.O.A.T = break out another thousand LOL.

I just placed the order for the 9amp cdi stator, $159 from a place called great lakes skipper. Thanks for helping me narrow this down.

Someone had told me long ago about that. The 2 old 150s I had had green and were all 9s. Red and black? 16s. 9 and 16s will swap anyway

I've had red, grey, and green 9's. I'd have to check my XR2 to see if it was 16, it was black I think.

That serial won't pull up with Merc or anywhere else I've found only the serial numbers that have the letters in them work. (1A234567)

I don't ever use serial number lookup. I use year and hp lookup on boats.net if I need a part number. I can pretty much pull a year out of the hat if I know what part I'm looking for though...

Boats.net gave me two options when I typed in my year and hp, a 9amp and a 15amp. I took Merc 2.5’s advice and went with the 9amp but ordered it from someone else for a $100 cheaper. I’m hoping it is the one I need, gotta get this dialed in before the damn leaves fall off the trees here. I also went to the cdi.electronics website and put my motor info in and it came back saying the 9amp is what I need.

9 and 16 amp are interchangeable, 16 amp systems had a regulator but many guys that swap don't use one. Both use the same flywheel.

I hope that the stator fixes everything up. If the trigger wire from the trigger for #3 cylinder has been grounded, it will not fire #3. Make sure all trigger wires have good insulation on them. Also you could wrap electrical tape on them for extra protection. Not a lot of voltage or amperage on them anyway, but vital signal. Check the ohms on the three trigger coils as per Merc, they should all be close and 1100-1400 ohms on your meter. If you put on the new stator and #3 is not firing still and trigger checks out ok as above, then switch the switch boxes and see if the problem follows with a bad switch box and moves to cylinder #4 or stays on #3? Good luck.
