Torn between two Monty engine packages
What would you guys do?
I have a couple 3.3L blocks and several 3.0 finger port blocks
Im going to have Monty build me two drop-on powerheads for the Daytona 23 I’m picking up in 2 weeks. I told Monty I want a safe 87 octane build.
Option 1 is to go with the 3.3L blocks which will require custom pistons. I will also have to buy reconditioned rods at $80 a piece because I don’t have the correct ones in my parts. On top of that there is some mods the need to be done to the block to accept the carb setup but those costs aren’t bad. Looking at about $3500 in additional parts and work for the 3.3 setup over the 3.0 build. Benefits are new pistons and recon rods and additional torque of the 3.3
Option 2 is a standard 3.0 build with what would likely be more port work to make the same power. I may need to spend some money on hard parts but not nearly as much. The 3.0 won’t make the same torque although I’m not sure that matters much for this hull?
Are the benefits of the 3.3 build worth the added cost? Are the 3.3 builds worth more on resale if I inevitably decide on another project in a few years?
Im pretty sure I’m leaning towards the 3.3 unless you guys have good reasons to just go with a 3.0 build.
Also Gordon is a great guy to talk to....takes the time to explain things and gives options. Felt 100% comfortable in my choice to let him build me some good old fashioned carb motors

Build the biggest motors you can , it will somewhat offset the 87 octane friendly lower compression that you want .
Either way , the Wizard can make them fast and reliable ..

Either option you go with Gordon will make it right for you like Chaz said. If you want plenty of torque low end power the 3.3 is the best option & he can also make them rev high as well & make power up top as well. You can have over 300hp safely and reliably on pump gas. What mids & gearcases you plan on using?

Id like to use the midsection , pans and cowls off the 2004 225ho ficht motors. I’ve heard both ways on whether the cowl will clear the carbs.
Lowers I’m up in the air still. I have one standard rotation L1 case and one standard rotation mid 90s v6 case. I guess options are build a counter rotating L1 or buy a counter rotating v6 case and ha e them coned and Lwp.
Is there a conversion to be able to run mercury lowers on the Omc stuff? I also have a pair of torque masters that are already cones with lwps

Wayne Taylor used to make an OMC mid with Sporty mount at bottom. I know they were available in a 16", not sure if he made any 20" mids. Good luck finding a pair today...

There's that old cliche'...........there's no replacement for displacement. If I had your terrible dilemna of choosing between the sets of motors, I would go big every time........way too many advantages in my book.

...what do you guys think about having three built of the same powerhead? in other words, a spare as well?

Sam Jenkins is who you need to get in contact with if you want the Taylor mids, he has the molds for them...
