    1999 Merc 175 EFI Rods

I need to buy a replacement rod but confused as to what the casting numbers should be, P/Number 644-818141 castings are all the same on one side, but the backside of the rod has various info cast into it, what's it all mean ? Mine is: AR (rod end) & 84 (piston pin side).
    Thanks

Not sure what those mean but they all have em. Probably casting codes of some sort. If you need the rod I have a few of em.

    Rock,

Yes I'm in need of one rod: 644-818141, back side casting info: AR @ crank & 84 at piston pin. I think Charlie P. said the 84 had something to do with a weight code. It's all new to me.

    Thank you

    Hey Texas,

Are you agreeing that the #84 is a weight code of some sort ? Rod weighs in at 325 grams. Just try'n to learn these 2.5's.

yes its the weight class of the rods though im not a fan of " its very important to weigh balance rods for optimum rebuilding" ive built way too many efi mercs (over 400) and what i find in them is surprising IE promax's have light rods and it goes from there onward how ever you want to carry it and yes ive built a few that i did all the matching rods pins and pistons weights deal to with in a few grams the difference was negligible

Thanks Texas, since this motor is a winter project, I planned on doing the balancing of rods, pins, & pistons. It may not amount to much and the benefits maybe small, but it's a long winter in Ohio and I kinda figured, why not as every little bit helps. Just and FYI on the stock pistons, OEM pistons (all 6) weighed in at 9.873 ounces more in total weight than the Wiseco replacements, that's a total reduction of a half a pound of moving mass , to me that's a substantial amount, haven't even checked all the rods and pins yet.

    Thanks again,
    Gary

I have seven 818141 rods off pistons so I measured them and this is what I found. Two were marked z/47 and they weighed 366.8 and 364.8 grams. AC/54 weighed 372.1. D/5 was 361.5. U/26 was 355.2. C/7 was 355.5 and G/9 weighed353.3. The two with matching codes were 2 grams apart while the U/26 and C/7 were only .3 of a gram difference. The rod I said I had available is an AC/54 @ 372.1 grams however after some inspection I would not use that rod so neither will you. I have a pile of pistons with rods still attached and today I will try to go thru them in search of an AR/84. What is the weight you are shooting for? Like Bobby I have built quite a few of these things and have only balanced rods in several and did not really notice much difference. In a 10,000 rpm motor it probably matters more than on a lower rpm unit. You mentioned Wiseco so be sure your machinist knows they need a bit more clearance.

All my good rods are cast w/ #84 and it weighs 360.4g. I'm not going anywhere near 10K RPM . Thanks Rock.

Hey Randy hope all is well i most likely have 60 or 70 loose rods and i could be mistaken on weights versus stamped numbers ( im 74 now and the clouds are all around me so if im wrong sorry )since its been several years since i did all the cutting and grinding on a set but i personally think weight match contributes little toward fishing motor building versus performance ask Chaz( not that Rock isn't a pro because he is all of that and more) i believe he has his on opinion on this matter of rod/piston weights and results, i have found rods in the same motor that has never been apart that weight 40 grams different from one rod to another
